BLACKSBURG PUTS DOWN SPARTANS

Jon Hutchins scored 16 points and Blacksburg survived a last-second 3-point attempt by Salem's Herschel Thomas to down the Spartans 62-60 in a non-district boys' basketball game Thursday in Blacksburg.

Hutchins paced three players in double figures. Michael Davis added 13 points, and Philip Klaus had 12 for the Indians (3-4).

The Spartans, who trailed by five going into the final period, came back behind Andy Beach, who scored eight of his 14 in the fourth quarter, and some stellar free-throw shooting. Salem made 20 of 23 free-throw attempts for the game.

Thomas, who led the Spartans with a game-high 20, including 14 in the first half, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have given Salem the win.

Floyd County 91, North Cross 46: Travis Cantrell scored 22 points and Derek Saunders had 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Buffaloes routed the Raiders in a non-district contest at Floyd.

Floyd County, which led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter, outscored North Cross 31-8 in the second period en route to victory.

Brandon LaCroix led North Cross with nine points.

Girls

North Cross 43, Carlisle 35: Mary Angela Mull had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Raiders to their first victory of the season.

Mull had nine points in the fourth quarter to keep North Cross (1-4 overall, 1-1 Blue Ridge Conference) safely ahead.

Liberty 68, William Campbell 53: Raymond Arrington scored a game-high 19 points, including four 3-pointers as Liberty remained unbeaten with the Seminole District win over William Campbell in Naruna.

J.J. Coles added 15 points for the Minutemen (7-0, 7-0). Neil Roop chipped in 12 and Robert Carson had.

William Campbell (3-5, 3-5) was led by Cory Waller, who scored 14 points.

Covington 91, Highland 71: Covington used a 13-0 run spanning the first and second quarters to take control and knock off Highland in a Pioneer District game in Covington.

Covington (3-5, 2-1) was led by Dusty Roman, who scored a game-high 22 points. Cory Whitaker added 18 points, and Irwin Twitty and Brian Holloway each had 10.

Highland (2-5, 0-1) was led by Timmy Harold, who scored 18. Brian Werner added 17 points, including three 3-pointers.
