BLACKSBURG PUTS DOWN SPARTANS

Jon Hutchins scored 16 points and Blacksburg survived a last-second 3-point attempt by Salem's Herschel Thomas to down the Spartans 62-60 in a non-district boys' basketball game Thursday in Blacksburg.

Hutchins paced three players in double figures. Michael Davis added 13 points, and Philip Klaus had 12 for the Indians (3-4).

The Spartans, who trailed by five going into the final period, came back behind Andy Beach, who scored eight of his 14 in the fourth quarter, and some stellar free-throw shooting. Salem made 20 of 23 free-throw attempts for the game.

Thomas, who led the Spartans with a game-high 20, including 14 in the first half, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have given Salem the win.
