Tidewater phones to get new code
A new telephone area code - 757 - was assigned Friday for Virginia's Tidewater region, according to Bell Communications Research, a New Jersey-based company that administers the numbering plan for North America. When it is introduced in the second half of this year, it will be fourth area code in the state.
On Dec. 8, representatives of the telecommunications industry announced they were carving a new area code out of the region served by Virginia's existing 804 area code because customer growth was depleting the supply of numbers in that region.
The new code will serve the Eastern Shore and much of Virginia's southeastern corner, including Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
