BECKER, David Michael, 47, of Ivanhoe, died Monday, January 1, 1996. Memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday, Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville.

CARTER, Shirley Diane, 43, of Roanoke, died Thursday, January 4, 1996. Surviving is her husband, Gary L. Carter; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana M. and David W. Lewis, Sherry C. and Joseph P. Hamm, Jr.; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Gina P. Carter; father, William H. Vickers Jr.; one sister, Theresa J. Smith; three grandchildren, Allicia and Brittany Lewis, Eddie Joel Hamm; numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel 11 a.m. Monday, January 8, 1996 with the Rev. Roy W. S hewbridge will officiate. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel after 12 noon Sunday

CROCKETT, Newton Thorn, 69, of Rt. 2, Wytheville, died Thursday, January 4, 1996 at his residence. He was born in Wythe County October 2, 1926, the son of the late J. Newton and Alberta C. Crockett. He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by a brother, John H. ``Jack`` Crockett. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, S. Rush and June Crockett, Wytheville; six nieces and nephews, Pat and Kenny Hurst, with whom he made his home, Wytheville, Rose C. Baker, Lebanon, Tenn., John and Kathleen Crockett, Fairfax, Sid and Nancy Crockett, Samuel R. Crockett Jr., Susan and Bill Pollard, all of Wytheville. Three great-nieces; four great-nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 7, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Donald D. Drake officiating. Interment will follow in the Crockett Family Cemetery in the Cove. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home Sunday from 1 p.m. until service time. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Cove Brick Presbyterian Church or the Crockett Family Cemetery Fund, c/o Sid Crockett, 1500 Pepper's Ferry Road, Wytheville, VA. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of arrangements.

GOODLETT, William Herbert, 87, of Salem, died Thursday, January 4, 1996 in a Roanoke hospital. He was a graduate of Roanoke College and he served in World War II as a medic in the Army on the Island of Tinian in the Pacific. His life was spent bringing joy and pleasure to others. He taught thousands to dance, hundreds unable to read to read, Boy Scouts to be substantial citizens and art to senior citizens. Surviving is one brother, Robert G. Goodlett of Salem; a ne phew, Earl Gordon Goodlett III, Silver Springs, Md. Graveside services will be held Monday, January 8, 1996, at 10 a.m. in Sherwood Memorial Park. Friends may call at Lotz Salem Chapel after 2 p.m. Saturday

HALE, Alvin C., of Roanoke, died Thursday, January 4, 1996 at the Virginia Veteran's Care Center after a long illness. He was born in Roanoke on February 4, 1921, the son of Morgan C. and Blanche Slone Hale. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and National Business College, a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from Norfolk Southern Railway. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Jean Nash Hale; his three daughters and sons-in-law, Susan H. and David A. Haynes, Roanoke, Charlotte H. and Johnson S. Moore, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Elizabeth H. and Michael A. Lemacks, Raleigh, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Kathryn and Meredith Haynes, Evan and Ryan Moore, Megan and Erica Lemacks; two brothers and sister-in-law, Fred C. Hale and Ruth K. Hale, Indianapolis, Ind., and Marvin L. Hale, Roanoke. A graveside service will be at Sherwood Memorial Park, 11 a.m. Monday, January 8, 1996, with the Rev. Robert L. Watts and the Rev. Walter M. HAMILTON, Lola Mae, 96, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, January 4 , 1996 at her home. Born October 9, 1899 in Pluto, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Wriston and Cal Vest Richmond. Mrs. Hamilton was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Levi Hamilton; and two sons, Roy Hamilton and Patrick Hamilton. She is survived by six daughters, Ruth Dorey, Velma Cash, Mattie Holland and Jackie Sandidge, all of Buena Vista, Betty Slajer, Richmond, and Dottie Huffman, Glasgow; three sons, James Hamilton and Tommy Hamilton, both of Buena Vista, and Dickie Hamilton, Glasgow; a sister, Iva Fortener, Beckley, W.Va.; three brothers, Arthur Richmond, Harrisonburg, William Richmond, Boomer, W.Va., and Earl Richmond, Shady Springs, W.Va.; 34 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 7, at the Lomax Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Chip Pendleton officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. HUDSON, James Leonard, 81, of Radford, died Thursday, January 4, 1996 at his home. He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local #491 for 50 years. He was also a member of the VA MAY Lodge #38 AF & AM. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy B. Hudson, Radford; one daughter, Joan Easterling, Radford; three sisters, Mary Ramey, Roanoke, Betty Ferrell, Christiansburg, Margaret Angle, Rocky Mount; one granddaughter and her husband, Lynn and Jeff Phillips, Radford; three great-grandchildren, Scott Phillips, Radford, Taryn Phillips, Radford, Adam Phillips, Radford; his Care Givers, Peggy Davidson and Kathleen Horton. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Danny Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home in Radford. VA MAY will conduct Masonic graveside services. KING, Thomas J. III, 77, of 16 Thayer Road, Hampton, N.H., and more recently of RiverWoods of Exeter, died Friday, January 5, 1996 at the Exeter Hospital. He was born in Roanoke, Va. January 21, 1918, the son of the late Thomas J. and Minnie A. (Shumate) King II, and was raised and attended local schools there. Mr. King worked as a Naval Intelligence Agent for the U.S. Government for over 20 years, retiring in 1973. He had resided in Hampton since 1963, coming from Stoneham, Mass. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy, and served over 25 years in the Naval Reserves. He was a 21-year member of the Warwick Club of Portsmouth, an avid golfer, and enjoyed playing handball and racquetball. He was the husband of the late Margaret L. (McNamara) King, who died in 1991. He is survived by three daughters, Carol K. Finn, Greenland, Paula K. Cushman and Andrea King Greene, both of Stratham; three grandchildren, Brian Croall, David Croall, Jordan King Greene; one sister, Hazel K. Eakin, Roanoke, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Sunday, from 2 to 4 p.m. Services and interment will be private. LaPRAD, Ruby Ferguson, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, January 4, 1996, in a local hospital. She was the widow of Clyde Whitenack and R. Har ry LaPrad. She was a member of Airlee Court Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Carlesa Shreves Burger, Boones Mill; stepdaughter, Shirley Willis; stepson, Harry (Sonny) LaPrad Jr., both of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Crystal Shreves Naff, Jenny Shreves Flora, Bethany Shreves; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mrs. Elma Custer, Pensacola, Fla., Mrs. Nira Lawrence, Charlottesville; sister-in-law, Lillian Ferguson, Roanoke; also a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at Oakey's North Chapel at 11:30 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. John Hamric officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. OTEY, Mildred Joyce, 57, of Roanoke, died Friday, January 5, 1996. RADER, Lawrence William, 80, of Fincastle, died Friday, January 5, 1996. He was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church and is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Judy G. and Gene R. Kelly, Fincastle; one grandson, Clinton R. Kelly, San Jose, Calif. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 7, 1996, 2 p.m. at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Dr. Gene M. RILEY, Clarence Hammond, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, January 5, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Cassie Gusler Riley; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Larry Humphreys, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Jack A. and Edna S. Riley, Roanoke; one granddaughter, Melanie Harmon; two great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Maude and Sam Stanley. To honor Mr. Riley's wishes, there will be no visitation.
