Discrimination suit against NPR settled

WASHINGTON - National Public Radio has settled a sex discrimination case with a former employee for an undisclosed amount, both sides said Friday.

NPR spokeswoman Kathy Scott confirmed the agreement with former reporter Katie Davis, but said she could not comment on its terms

Davis had worked at NPR for 15 years before alleging last April that it discriminated against her by failing to give her a permanent position and by paying her less than men in comparable jobs.

Oatmeal garners `heart-healthy' label

WASHINGTON - That box of oatmeal soon may bear a new slogan - that it's heart-healthy.

The Food and Drug Administration this week proposed allowing food manufacturers to advertise that diets high in oatmeal or oat bran - and low in fat - can fight heart disease by lowering cholesterol.

The FDA, in a proposal in Thursday's Federal Register, said food containing 13 grams of oat bran or 20 grams of oatmeal could carry a heart-healthy claim - provided the food didn't have other unhealthy ingredients such as lots of fat or salt.
