Zach Chapin, a pupil at Penn Forest Elementary School in Roanoke County, recently was named overall winner in the 1995 National Family Week essay contest sponsored by Family Service of Roanoke Valley.

Zach's essay, "Why my Family is Special," was chosen from those submitted by fourth-graders in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem. The essays were judged by participants in the Roanoke College Honors Program.

Zach received a U.S. Savings Bond from Lewis-Gale Medical Center, Roanoke Express tickets and free pizza for a year from Domino's Pizza.

Winners from individual schools in Roanoke included: Woodrow Scurry, Ellen Smart, Lauren Smith, Michael Kotchish, Bryce Peters, Carolyn Lipper, Chris Brown, Dominique Craggett and Nicole Baldwin.

In addition to Zach, winners from Roanoke County included Jennia McPeak, Chelsea Vaughan, Melinda Luckado, Brandon Lipscomb and Allison Dwier.

Salem winners were Stephanie Carl and Michael Gregg. Private school pupils submitting winning essays were Emily Weddle, Amy Park and Jackson Andrews.
