More than 700 elementary school kids enjoyed Blacksburg High School's most recent theatrical production.
Pupils from Harding Avenue, Kipps and Gilbert Linkous elementary schools attended two showings of "Cinderella Wore Combat Boots," on Thursday at the high school. The one-act play, written by Jerry Chase, is a unique twist to the traditional fairy tale.
The production took second place last month at the Virginia High School League state competition in Charlottesville. It also placed second at the regional competition and took first place at the district competition.
At the state level, Blacksburg competed against seven other school finalists from across the state. First place went to Abingdon High School, which also beat Blacksburg for first place at the regional competition. Only the top two winners went home with trophies.
Following is a list of the cast members: John Schwartz, storyteller; Jason Adamo, prince; Robert Woodfield, king; Sarah Landres, godzella; Suzanne Chisholm, Mazzarella; Krista Geller, questioner #1; Beth Libey, questioner #2; Gilee Reid, stepmother; Craig Zamer, the Herald; Jamie Wright, fairy godperson; and Shannon Marx, Cinderella. Alan Wieczynski was stage manager and James Graham was technical manager. The group was directed by Terryee Chisholm.
Schwartz was recognized at the state level as one of eight best actors. Adamo received a best actor award at the regional level.
First-graders at the Blacksburg New School recently completed a unit on the principle of sound. Each pupil in Natalie Quesenberry's class built an experimental apparatus to demonstrate a principle of sound, while at the same time displaying a feat of scientific magic.
Emily Lee demonstrated the hidden-ball trick. She filled three opaque glasses with water. Without Lee looking, another classmate placed a ball inside one of the glasses. Lee then struck each glass to find the one with the ball. She explained she was able to "find" the right glass because water rises when the ball is in the glass; therefore, the striking sound is lower.
Other experiments included amplifying music from a radio without touching it and getting a playing card to jump from one glass to another.
First-graders who participated include Isaac Chatfield, John Lopez, Cam White, Owen Gallagher, Kate Matthews, Justin Holcomb and Colin Bixler.
SPORTS AWARDS
The Western Virginia Football Officials Association selected Blacksburg High School to receive the 1995 Sportsmanship Award. The award's criterion includes conduct of players and coaches, school officials, rooting section and cheerleaders.
About 132 football officials vote on the recipient of the award, which is presented by the Roanoke Civitan Club. The school also receives a $500 check.
Co-captains Kip Kenyon, Steven Hunt and Tucker LaForce, along with head coach David Crist, athletic director Warren Murphy and principal Alfred Smith represented the school at the association's 45th annual Civitan Sportsmanship Award program.
