Coal production in '95 dips slightly

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The nation's coal production fell slightly to 1.02 billion tons in 1995, according to preliminary figures released Monday.

It was only the third time production topped 1 billion. Production hit a record 1.03 billion tons in 1994 and 1.029 billion in 1990, according to figures from the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration.

Virginia mines produced 406,000 tons during the week ended Dec. 30, compared with 452,000 tons in the corresponding week of 1994.

Va. utility paid most taxes in '95

Virginia Power paid $180.1 million in state and local taxes during 1995, which the Richmond-based utility said makes it the state's largest single taxpayer.

The taxes included $84.6 million paid to the state and localities on gross receipts and $89.5 million in local government property taxes. Sales and other taxes made up the rest.
