BLOOD SHORTAGE CRITICAL

The American Red Cross has declared a blood emergency because of weather conditions that have dramatically affected blood collections.

The New River Valley Donor Center, 130 Jackson St., will be open Thursday, noon-6 p.m., to take donations.

Appointments may be made by calling 961-2207, but are not necessary. At least 56 days must have passed since your last blood donation.

Red Cross officials said the snow blanketing the Northeast and Atlantic coastline has paralyzed transportation, causing blood supplies to fall to levels that will serve hospitals for only one or two days.

With many East Coast Red Cross blood services regions closed and unable to collect or distribute blood in major cities, only about half a day's blood supply can be collected each day.
