Raymond Harden Beamer, the father of Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer, died early Wednesday morning at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax. The Fancy Gap resident was 85.
The cause of death was not immediately known.
Frank Beamer received the news Wednesday in New Orleans, where he was attending the American Football Coaches' Association convention, and was scheduled to return to his home Wednesday evening.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Woodlawn.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Fancy Gap United Methodist Church, c/o Faye Hill, Fancy Gap, 24328.

Virginia football players Patrick Jeffers and Mike Groh have been selected to participate in postseason all-star games.
Groh, a record-setting quarterback, will join Jeffers on the East team for the East-West Shrine Bowl at 4 p.m. Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif. The game can be seen on ESPN.
Jeffers, a standout wide receiver, also will play in the Hula Bowl on Jan. 21 in Honolulu.
