The Roanoke Sylvan Learning and Technology Center, a unit of Columbia, Md.-based Sylvan Learning Centers, will open Saturday at 2010 Stephenson Ave. The center's staff will describe Sylvan's instructional methods and computer-based testing programs at an open house.
The Roanoke center is part of a network of more than 500 Sylvan Learning Centers in the United States and Canada.

Continental begins flights to Newark
Continental Express, the commuter arm of Houston-based Continental Airlines, has delayed until today the launch of its new daily, non-stop service between Roanoke and Newark, N.J., citing weather delays at Newark International Airport. The service had been scheduled to start Wednesday.
Continental Express will offer three daily round-trip flights on the route, aboard 30- and 32-seat turbo-prop planes. It is the only daily, non-stop service offered between Roanoke and the New York City area.
Continental is offering a special $122 round-trip excursion fare between Roanoke and Newark that requires a 7-day advance purchase and a Saturday overnight stay. That offer expires Feb. 29. The current rate for one-way tickets bought the day of departure are $267.

Flowers Industries Inc., Thomasville, Ga., baker with operations in Bedford and Roanoke, reported second-quarter net income of $7.9 million, or 14 cents per share, on sales of $290.5 million, compared with year-earlier $10.6 million, or 19 cents per share, on sales of $269.9 million. For six months, net income was $15.8 million, or 28 cents per share, on sales of $560.2 million, compared with $16.9 million, or 30 cents per share, on sales of $503.5 million.
