NEIGHBORHOOD NAMES

RICHARD SHELL has been elected 1996 president of the Roanoke chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.

Other officers elected are: Carl Jensen, vice president; Bill Arnold, national director; Connie Molinary, secretary; Wanda Troutman, treasurer; and Gary Ballard, Gary Gray, Chris Helmer and Paul Howell, all directors.

JAMES E. PEARMAN has been named president of the Southwestern Food Bank's board of directors. He has been on the board since 1991 as chairman of the finance committee.

KENNETH L. GAULDIN was elected worshipful master of the Pleasants Masonic Lodge No. 63, A.F.&A.M., in December. Other officers elected are: John W. Hardin, senior warden; David B. Baumgardner Jr., junior warden; James H. Hubbard, treasurer; Samuel C. Palmer Jr., secretary; R. Carter Cox, senior deacon, H. Ralph Lane, junior deacon; W. Preston Leech, chaplain; John D. Lawrence, senior steward; J. David Cheatham, junior steward; Charles W. Hale, tiler; and G. Frank Loudermilk, five-year member of the Board of Trustees.

BRENDA ALTMAN, president of Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chapter of Mother's Against Drunk Driving (MADD), received the Governor's Transportation Safety Award for 1995 in the Impaired Driving category.

Altman of Roanoke is the first individual to win the governor's award in this category.

THE BOARD OF THE ROANOKE VALLEY PRESERVATION FOUNDATION has elected Joyce Waugh of the Roanoke County Economic Development Department as president. She succeeds George Kegley..

Other officers are: H.S. "Rusty" Pritchett vice president and president-elect, Evie Lander, secretary; and Helen Hill, treasurer. New board members are Brenda McDaniel and Victoria Coogan.

THE VINTON MASONIC LODGE NO. 204, A.F. and A.M. recently elected the following officers for 1996: Buddy A. Davis, worshipful master; Edward L. Barger, senior warden; C. Keith Gatrell, junior warden; Alfred C. Anderson, treasurer; Ronald N. Underwood, secretary; Richard D. Brenner, senior deacon; L. Keith Maxey, junior deacon; Gordon L. Watson, tiler; Joseph L. Bush, chaplain; Randy A. Kessler, marshal; David H. Cundiff, senior steward; J.E. "Eddie" Glover, junior steward.

THE UNITED WAY OF ROANOKE VALLEY recently announced that 30 men and women from the Roanoke area completed the 1995 Minority Leadership Enhancement Program. The program is designed to increase the representation of blacks or racial minorities on the boards and committees of the United Way and community agencies.

They participants were: Stephen Barber, Karen Belcher, Frontis Blakeney, Tracy Blaney, Winifred Brown, Lysa Day, Bernard Edoga, Marjorie Golden, Jonathon Goodman, Gwen Harris, Denise Henderson, Paige Hairston, Daniel Hale, Connie Holbrook-Knighten, Sandra Hughes, Michelle Jones, Wendy Jones, Robin Murphy-Kelso, Michelle Pearson, Anita Powell, Nadirah Preston, Wincey Recard, Anita Reed, Steve Sample, Thomas Stokes, Leray Tate, Juanita Veney, Earnest Wilson, Latifah Ya'sin and Jenny Yee.

THE BLUE RIDGE ASSOCIATION FOR VOLUNTEER ADMINISTRATION recently elected officers and named members of its executive board. They are Tamara B. Stinson, president; Carrie C. Owens, president-elect; Kathy Stockburger , vice president; Mary Forti, corresponding secretary; D. Jane Walls, recording secretary; R.B. "Ben" Crawford , treasurer; and Kim Kirk, Mary Schnitzer, and Pat Hill, all directors.

COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES recently were sworn in by Judge Philip Trompeter. These volunteer child advocates completed a 30-hour training course and will average 10-15 hours per month in community service. Those recently sworn-in are: Amy Bennett, Melissa Bradley, Ann Carradine, Deborah Cates, Pat Charles, Phyllis Crawford, Nikki Hale, Frances Holman, Tammy Javier, Wanda Manuel, Jessica Martin, Jennifer Minnix, Gail Moody and Patricia Webster.

KRISTIN ANN JONES of Roanoke recently published a poem in "Sparkles in the Sand," a book of poetry compiled by The National Library of Poetry. Her poem is titled "The Man I Once Knew" and is about dead-beat dads.
