The Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program conducted through Roanoke City Public Schools has received an LBJ Family Foundation grant for outstanding service in motivating youngsters to read. The grant will be used to purchase additional books.|
The American Express Foundation has given a $400 grant to the Roanoke Valley Therapeutic Riding Program. The grant, which recognizes organizations where American Express employees volunteer on a regular basis, will be used to help acquire land for a permanent facility for the program.|
David McManamay of Roanoke and his leader dog, "Dusty," have completed the dog guide training course at Leader Dogs for The Blind in Rochester, Mich. David becomes the 158th Virginia graduate of the school, which has trained more than 10,000 blind people and their dogs in its 56-year history. Lions and Lioness Clubs support the school, which does not charge students for the training.
