OUTREACH

The Presbyterian Community Center, a service agency at 1228 Jamison Ave. S.E., is undergoing a renovation that will include a new floor. The renovations are part of program initiatives adopted during a summer board of directors meeting.

A new adult literacy program will be offered in the spring, and a class to teach parenting class started in October. For more information about the center's free programs, most staffed by church volunteers, call 982-2911.

The Alma Hunt Cottage, an eight-bedroom home for mentally retarded women at the Virginia Baptist Children's Home and Family Services in Salem, is under construction by volunteers from 35 congregations in the Roanoke Valley Association of Southern Baptists. An estimated 170 people from Baptist and other churches are completing the interior. Additional funds, however, are needed to furnish the bedrooms and the living room and dining area. Call 366-7631 to offer time or money. The cottage is named for a retired Southern Baptist mission leader who lives in Roanoke.

PEOPLE

The Rev. John Armitstead has left the pastorate of Fincastle Baptist Church to become a full-time chaplain with the U.S. Army Reserves. He is stationed in Alabama.

The Rev. William Smithwick has resigned as pastor of Midland Baptist Church in Vinton. Smithwick, 45, has been on the staff of the Virginia Baptist Children's Home and Family Services in Salem since 1983 and will continue there. He began his Roanoke-area ministry at Mill Creek Baptist Church in Botetourt County.

Jeff Hummel has left the staff of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in downtown Roanoke. Hummel has been the part-time director of music there for the past eight years. He is moving to Richmond as manager of the AAA office.

Melissa Cable, a graduate of Union University in Jackson, Tenn., has become the part-time organist at Bonsack United Methodist Church. She also works as an accountant in the health care industry.

SPIRITUALITY CLASSES

Church Leadership Courses, some specifically for the sponsoring United Methodist District and others relevant to other denominations, are scheduled Saturday from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton. The workshops include: "Finding Our Way Forward: Strategies for a New Day," "Empowering Lay Ministry" and "The Ministry of Administration." A snow date is Jan. 20. Call 389-2933 for a full schedule.

The Revelation to John will be the theme of a study by the Rev. Jack Lowe, pastor at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren, beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m. The free study of broad concepts of the New Testament book is open to the community. The church is at 5325 Cove Road N.W.

The Sandwich Generation, a Sunday morning study at 9:30, has started at First Presbyterian Church. The study covers the role of faith in coping with maturing children and elderly parents and will be taught by a number of church members who have special training and experience. MUSICAL EVENTS

New Grace, a Southern gospel group, will perform Sunday at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 305 Mountain Ave. S.W.

Praise Cafe, an evening of Christian music in a smoke and alcohol-free atmosphere, will be open Friday at 6:30 p.m. Spirit FM Radio is sponsoring the event at the Sheraton Inn-Airport . A $7 buffet meal will be served from 6:30 to 8:30.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Rev. David C. Forbes Jr. of Columbus (Ohio) Christian Center, will address a Virginia conference of the Full Gospel Baptist Churches on Saturday. at the Sheraton Inn-Airport. The new Roanoke Spirit of Life Full Gospel Baptist Church, led by the Rev. Antonio D. Thomas, is the host congregation.

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. with a registration fee of $5 per person. Worship and workshops will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Call 563-2400 for more information.

"Come the Morning," a film about a broken family's need for Christ, will be shown Sunday at 6 p.m. at Salem Wesleyan Church, 424 Chamberlain Lane in Salem. The World Wide Pictures video is free for the community.

United Marriage Encounter, an evangelical Christian program to help married couples strengthen their relationship, will sponsor a weekend retreat Feb. 23-25 in Roanoke. For place and more information call Bill and Phyllis Lowe at 977-2628.
