Mr. Bales was born on April 2, 1895 in Pr ospect Dale, Va. and was a daughter of the late George M. and Matilda Shinault Whittaker. Mrs. Bales was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, Bane, Va. Mrs. Bales was also preceded in death by a son, Edgar L. Bales Jr. and her husband, Edgar L. Bales Sr. She is survived by two daughters, Irene B. Moye of Pearisburg, Dorothy B. Strauss of Salem; one son, Madison (Moody) Bales of Eggleston; 11 grandchildren; and several great-and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 13, 1996, at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home. He was a son of the late Jabez Martin and Sadie Lee Vipperman Beckner, and was a retired Church of God minister. He was preceded in death by a son, Hershell LeRoy Beckner. DOMINICI, Sarah Willson, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 9, 1996, at Brookside Nursing Home in Anderson, S.C. She was the daughter of Phillip and Edith Mae Engleby Willson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chief Petty Officer Lewis Richard Dominici. Mrs. Dominici attended the Colleg e of William and Mary, Williamsburg, and graduated from Roanoke College, Salem, in 1930. After graduation, she taught in a one-room school house in Farmville. Mrs. Dominici was a lifelong member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Sarah Gail Richards, Seneca, S.C., and Shirley Lou Turner; three grandchildren. EARLY, Nelson Andrew, 68, of Salem, died Wednesday, January 10, 1996. He was a long time Salem resident and had worked at Valleydale for 28 years, and then went on to retire from Rowe Furniture in 1992, after 10 years with them. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Gayle Earley, Salem; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Woody Henderson, Salem; and their mother, Anna Mae Slurnoy; six grandchildren; a brother, Lance Early, Hampton; numerous nieces and nephews. GORDON, Evelyn N., 91, of Blacksburg, died Monday, January 8, 1996. Survivors include her son, Ronald S. Gordon and daughter-in-law, Joan C. Gordon of Blacksburg; five grandchildren, Mary C. Gordon and Edie A. Gordon, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, William J. Gordon, Salem, Oregon, Sarah J. Gordon, Boulder, Colorado, and Kate L. Gordon, Portland, Maine. Mrs. Gordon was born in Crockett, California on September 26, 1904, to the late Katheryn and Henry Benson, and was the remaining survivor of eight brothers and sisters. She was married to the late Leonard Nelson and subsequently married to the late C. H. Gordon. Mrs. Gordon was a professional business woman, specializing in bookkeeping and accounting for more than forty years in the San Francisco area; with California Notion and Toy and Berven Carpet Corporation, both in the San Francisco Bay area; worked many years for the University of California Extension Service in Berkeley, where she lived most of her adult life. In 1985 she moved to Salt Lake City to be with her son's family. She moved to Blacksburg, Virginia in 1991, where she was a resident of Showalter in Warm Hearth. Interment will be in Sunset View Cemetery Berkeley, California. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home.

He was retired from Roanoke City Schools after 34 years as an Industrial Arts Teacher. He was an Air Force Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of VPI & SU having received a Bachelors of Science and a Masters of Science Degree. He was a charter member of the Epsilon Pi Tau, honorary professional fraternity at VPI, member of Virginia Techs Alumni Association and Hokie Club. He was a Past President of Ridge Rifle Association, member of Blue Ridge Woodturners, a life member of N.R.A., local order of Masonic Lodge #284 A.F. & A.M., American Association of Woodturners and Virginia Shooting Sports Association. He was a senior instructor of Hunter Education, a voluntary program, for 15 years. Survivors are wife, Helen; daughter Stephanie Ann, Denmark, Wis.; son, Eric Conrad, Roanoke; brother and sister-in-law, Christopher and Jean Hollenbach; a sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Elmer Conrad; several nieces and nephews, all of Pottstown, Pa. Born in Charleston, W.Va. on July 20, 1934, he was preceded in death by his father, James Garfield Leftwich. Mr. Leftwich was a retired lab supervisor with Virginia Tech. O'BRIEN, Bonita Reynolds, 74, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, January 10, 1996 in Radford Community Hospital after a lingering illness. She is survived by one daughter, Mari O'Brien, Blacksburg; two sisters, Stella R. Lawrence, Christiansburg, Josie Landrum, Radford; one brother, Manuel Reynolds, Radford; one grandson, Jason Grooms, Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. POE, Walter Scott, 74, of Pulaski, died Tuesday, January 9, 1996 in Radford Community Hospital. He was born in Grayson County on July 16, 1921 to the late Ken Poe and Laura Phipps Poe. He is survived by his wife, Lena Bedsaul Poe, Pulaski; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Wayne Frost, Galax, Joyce and Jimmy Kenny, Roanoke, Susan and Danny Burroughs, Dublin; one brother, Frank Poe, Galax; two sisters-in-law, Alma Poe and Willie Poe, both of Galax; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Fune ral services Friday at 11 a.m. in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with the Elder Jess Higgins officiating. Burial will follow in Monta Vista Memory Gardens.

PULLEN, Mr. John Edward, of Bedford, departed this life, Tuesday, January 9, 1996 in Lynchburg, Va. He was born in Bedford on October 4, 1943 and was the son of Katye Anderson Pullen and the late John Henry Pullen. He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Reynolds. He was a member of the Lovely Zion Baptist Church in Bedford and was a 30 year employee of Georgia Pacific in Big Island, Va. In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Carletha Rae Pullen of Lynchburg; wife, Betty Otey Pullen of Roanoke; four sisters, Peggy Hairston, Mary Stiff, and Kay Thompson all of Newport News, and Rubye Lowry of Bedford; two brothers, Willie G. Pullen of Fort Washington, Md., Gary J. Pullen of Bedford; three brothers-in-law, Harry N. Stiff, Alfred Lowry, Donald Thompson; two sisters-in-law, Janet Pullen and Valerie Pullen; six nieces; nine nephews; two great-nieces; four great-nephews; and other relatives and friends. He is also survived by a devoted friend, Peggy Murray of Bedford. Funeral services and committal will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 1996 at the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel.
