BERNARD, Beulah Kirby, 101, of Southwest Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 8, 1996 at Brandon Oaks. She was born October 5, 1894 in Wirtz Va. and was the widow of Cabell C. Bernard and was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah C. Kirby and Ida Ferguson Kirby. She was a long time member of Cave Spring Baptist Church and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Services will be conducted at Oakey's South Chapel, 11 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Rick El more and Dr. Woodrow Clark officiating. Interment will follow in Longwood Cemetery, Bedford Va. BOWLING, Jean Nash, of 2212 Indian Hill Road, Lynchburg, died Thursday, January 11, 1996, at her home. She was the wife of Arthur Lee Bowling. Mrs. Bowling was born in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Robert Virgil Nash and Cora Daisy Martin Nash. She was a member of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher and Officer, and was a member of the Dorcas Class. She attended Jefferson High School and National Business College in Roanoke, was a former member of Woodside Garden Club of Lynchburg, and Exemplar of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. In addition to her husband she is survived by her son, Arthur Lee Bowling Jr. and his wife, Lynn Kingery Bowling of Decatur, Ga.; her daughter, Patty Page Bird and her husband, Steven Lee Bird of Fredericksburg; her grandchildren, Ross and Kathryn Bowling and Jonathan and Adam Bird. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 15, 1996, at Woodall-Tharp Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Robert Putt officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke. CARLYLE, Betty Ann, 56, of Bl acksburg, died Thursday, January 11, 1996 at her home. Born in Giles County, Va. on July 16, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Edward McKinley and Gladys Smith Dowdy. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Elizabeth Eaton. Mrs. Carlyle was a member of the Harvest Baptist Church in Blacksburg. Survivors include her husband, Denny Lewis Carlyle; two sons, Chuck Eaton and wife Linda, Denny (``Bear'') Carlyle, II; two grandchildren, Charlie Eaton and Clint Eaton; one sister, Loretta Alls, all of Blacksburg; one brother, Eddie Dowdy, Wytheville; and a special friend, Vickie Stump, Newport. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 14, 1996 at Harvest Baptist Church with Pastor Ernest H. Baker, Jr., and Pastor Douglas Testerman officiating. COLE, Hazel Betty, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 1996. Survivors include three sons, William Alton (Mary Ann) Brown, Roanoke, James L. (Margie) Brown, Martinsville, and Glen (Evelyn) Brown, Bedford; two sisters, Lena Jordan and Dorothy Jordan both of Roanoke; one brother, Clyde Jordan, Michigan; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. DAVIS, Charles Benjamin, (``Ben""), of Rocky Mount, died Thursday, January 11, 1996, in Kingsland, Ga. while in route to Fla. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Robertson Davis; and a daughter, Janice Davis-Pinckard, Roanoke. EDWARDS, Howard Everett, 73, of Route 5, Hillsville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 6, 1996, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Virginia. He was born in Carroll County, Va., June 23, 1922, to Harbert Fonzo Edwards and Leona Robinson Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a life-long farmer and also was a retired carpenter. Her was a graduate of Hillsville High School, Class of 1942, and he served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Nadene E. Edwards, who passed away in May, 1991. He also was preceded in death by his parents, Harbert Fonzo Edwards (1943) and Leona Robinson Edwards (1968); a brother, Cecil Minor Edwards (1908); and two sisters, Hattie Leona Edwards Webb (1989) and Bertie Ellen Edwards (1995). He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Helen Carole Edwards Melton and Joseph William Melton, and Charlotte Ann Edwards, all of Hillsville; two sisters, Laura B. Webb, Estie Fay Edwards, both of Hillsville; special caregiver, Sterling E. Goodson, of Galax; one niece; six nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Sunday, January 14, 1996 at 3 p.m. by James D. Jordan. Graveside services and interment will follow in the Worrell Cemetery. GARST, Thelma Audrey, 93, of Salem, died January 12, 1996. She was the daughter of John and Alie Murray Garst, Salem. She was a graduate of Univ ersity of Virginia, 1935. She was a former teacher and principal with Roanoke County Schools, and retired as Vice-President of Field Enterprises, Memphis, Tenn. in 1965. She was listed in Who's Who of American Women in 1968-69. She is survived by four nieces, Ruby Hollingsworth, Cambridge, Minn., Sarah Eblen, Joyce Cornette, Marion, Thelma Eblen, Salem; one nephew, Paul Eblen, Lynchburg; sister-in-law, Catherine Garst; brother-in-law, S. W. (``Pete'') Lavinder, Salem; as well as eleven great-nieces and nephews; several great great-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 15, 1996 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 42 E. HANNABASS, Fannie Hurt, 96, of Moneta, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 1996 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born June 26, 1899 in Franklin County, a daughter of the lat e Henry Hurt and Mary Ridgeway Hurt. Her husband was the late John T. Hannabass. She was a member of the Diamond Hill Union Church. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Hazel Hannabass, Moneta; a daughter and son-in-law, Avie and Levi Dillon, Providence Forge; three grandchildren and their spouses, James and Dale Hannabass, Moneta, Carolyn Hatcher, Bedford, Mike Dillon, Providence Forge; three great-grandchildren, Shannon Hannabass, Angela and Jason Hatcher. HENRY, Pearl Lewis, 80 of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 1996 at Friendship Manor. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ocie G. Wimmer and father, David Lewis Henry. She attended college at Bridgewater and Radford where she earned her BA degree and later attended Roanoke College. She taught for 36 years at Back Creek Elementary School. She is survived by cousins, nephews, nieces and all the childr en she loved and taught, along with many friends. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 1 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. KESLER, Gene William, 55 of Jacksonville, Fla. passed away Wednesday, January 10, 1996. He was born in Roanoke, Va. and had resided in Jacksonville for 14 years. Mr. Kesler was employed at the Acorn Division of TTX Corp. at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife of 13 years Linda S. Kesler of Jacksonville; mother Mrs. Ruby Musgrove,Roanoke, Va. MOUNTS, Patsy Diane, 61, of Vinton, went to be with our Lord and Savior, after a long battle with Diabetes. She suffers no longer and is being cradled in the arms of Jesus. She was preceded in death by her precious father, E. Pascal McFarland and dear husband, Ernest Eugene Mounts. MURPHY, Claudia B., of Bedford, departed this life on Wednesday, January 10, 1996 at the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Bedford County on December 3, 1918 and was the daughter of the late, William Oscar Murphy and Willie Murphy. She professed to Christ at an early age and joined the Promised Land Baptist Church and in later years she joined Washington Street Baptist Church. She was the President of the Senior Choir, member of the Gospel Chorus, member of the Ladies Aid Society, member of the Pastors Aid and a member of the Womens Auxiliary Association. She is survived by 4 daughters, Earnestine Brown, Bertha Parker, both of Bedford, Josephine Board, Goodview, Mabel Barber, Lynchburg; one son, Willie Murphy, Bedford; one devoted sister, Mrs. Ethel Arrington. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 15, 1996 at 11 a.m. at the Washington Street Baptist Church, Bedford. Interment will follow in family cemetery. SPICER, Mary W., 74, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, January 11, 1996. Mary was a member of First Baptist Church, a former volunteer with the American Cancer Society and was a retired Claims Representative for Nationwide Insurance. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Patsy Spicer, Roanoke; her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Ed Ooghe, Richmond, Peggy and Jim Baynton, White Hall, Pa., Becky Spicer and Roger Varney, Roanoke; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Kathleen Godfrey, Estelle Fields, both of Roanoke. STATON, Nannie Louis White, 84, of Vesuvius, died Thursday, January 11, 1996 at her home. She was born June 6, 1911 in Amherst County, the daughter of the late Joshua and Sally Foster White, and was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell E. S taton; and one son, M. P. Staton. Surviving are five daughters, Arlene Fox and Shirley Reid, both of Buena Vista, Thelma Smith, Buchanan, Lourena Hamm, Vesuvius, Deloris Roberts, Collinsville, Miss.; four sons, Vernon Staton, Buena Vista, William Staton and W. K. Staton, both of Vesuvius, Roger Staton, Glasgow; two sisters, Mamie Staton and Mary Jennings, both of Lynchburg; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at the Lomax Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Greg Martin. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. STENMAN, Oscar E., 77, of York, Penn., died Thursday, January 11, 1996 at Prince George's General Hospital in Cheverly, Md. He was the husband of the late Thelma A. (McFadden) Stenmen. The service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crem atory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York, Penn. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery, York. Viewing will be 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Mr. Stenman was born January 30, 1918, in Chicago, Ill. He was the son of the late Carl O. and Edith (Sandstrom) Stenman. He retired in 1980 from the Postal Service in Roanoke, Va., wher he was a mail carrier. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a member of the Roanoke VFW Post. Mr. Stenman was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in York, Penn. He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie S. Triplett, York, Penn.; and two grandchildren. WILLIAMS, Dennis J ., 67, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 11, 1996, after a lengthy illness with cancer, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a beloved mother, Ida Mae Overby; and father, John W. Williams; half brother, Larry Williams; three little angels, great-granddaughter, Ashleigh Nichole Swain, twin great-granddaughters, Devin Nicole and Paige Marie Williams. Surviving are his wife, Marie Gussler Williams; two children, Joan Pagans and Dennis J. Williams Jr.; granddaughter, Trish Pagans; grandson, Tyler Jay Williams; great-grandson, Travis Odell Swain, father and mother-in-law, Charlie and Laura Young Gussler; cousins; stepbrothers, J. T. and Wade Moorefield; stepsister, Ethel Wade. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 1996 at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Carter L. Sloan officiating. WOOD, Mildred Bennett, 81, of Caldwell, W. Va., went to be with the Lord early Friday morning, January 12, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Wood Sr. in 1983. Mrs. Wood was a member of the Caldwell Pentacostal Holiness Church where she faithfully served in many areas of ministry such as Women's Bible Class Teacher, Church Secretary-Treasurer, Women's Ministries President, Sunday School Secretary-Treasurer. She found her greatest joy in her personal relationship with Christ and serving others. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Walter L. Wood Jr. and Ann of Roanoke, Rev. Edward Wood and Freda Wood of Dublin; daughter and son-in-law, Thelma and Stuart Bashlor of Staunton; 11 devoted grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Odell of Dublin, Alfred H. Jr. of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., Roy E. and Bernard of Maryland; sisters, Dorothy Scruggs and Lillian Sizemore of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bennett Sr.; sister, Madeline Fogus; and brother, D.F. YOUNG, Don H., 76, of Grant, passed away Thursday, January 11, 1996 at his home. Born August 5, 1919 at Lincoln, Nebraska to Luther Melvin and Fannie Halsey Young. He was a member of Bridle Creek United Methodist Church, a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and a retired Postmaster, having served the Grant and Troutdale Post Offices for 33 years. Mr. Young was a member of Grant Grange. Survivors include his wife, Eula Moss Young, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Michelle Young, Jerry and Mary Young all of Independence; daughter and son-in-law, Regena and Greg Kanode of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Amy, Erin, Micki, Darin and Andrea Young all of Independence; brother and sister-in-law, Loyd and Virginia Young, Bel Air, Md.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna Clow, Akron, Ohio, Eva and Arthur Greer, Marion. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Bridle Creek United Methodist Church, Independence with interment in Grant Cemetery. The Rev. James Fain and the Rev. Camet Halsey will officiate. Military rites will be conducted at graveside by Grayson County V.F.W. Post #7726.
