NAMES & CHANGES

Tuck to head Va. medical society

DR. KENNETH D. TUCK, an ophthalmologist in Roanoke for 30 years, is president-elect of the Medical Society of Virginia and will become president of the organization in November.

Tuck has been councilor for the sixth district of the Medical Society of Virginia and chairman of the legislative affairs committee for the society for eight years. He is a former president of the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology and is on the board of trustees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

INSURANCE

The Roanoke Chapter of Certified Life Underwriters and Chartered Financial Consultants has installed new officers: DONALD F. CLEMENT, UVest Investments, president; MORRIS V. STOWERS, Nationwide Insurance Cos., Blacksburg, vice president and president-elect; MICHAEL W. PIORO, The Prudential, treasurer; and JOSEPH H. SURKAMER JR., Equitable Life, secretary.

New board members include E. MILLER BABER JR., Equitable Life; DONALD J. POTTER JR., Financial Strategies; DOYLE ROMINE, Modern Woodmen of America; VERA JO SPRINGER, New York Life Insurance Co.; and MICHAEL R. THOMAS, Shenandoah Life Insurance Co.

LAW

ROBERT C. HAGAN JR. has opened a law office in Daleville where he will concentrate on trial practice with an emphasis on personal injury and employment litigation. Hagan formerly was Botetourt County commonwealth's attorney and assistant commonwealth's attorney for 15 years, maintaining a general law practice for 14 years of that time.

MATTHEW L. IWICKI has joined the Roanoke firm of Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore as a senior associate. Iwicki, formerly with Venable, Baetjer & Howard in Baltimore, will practice in the field of environmental regulation and permits.

MANUFACTURING

PAUL EMANUELSON has been promoted to vice president of manufacturing at Timber Truss Housings Systems Inc. in Salem. He has been with Timber Truss for 12 years and has been plant manager for the last three years before his promotion.

FRED L. SCHUERMANN JR. has been named president and chief executive officer of High Point, N.C.-based Ladd Furniture Inc. KENNETH E. CHURCH has been promoted to the newly created position of president, Ladd Upholstery Group; and DONALD L. MITCHELL has joined the company in the new position of president, Ladd Casegoods Group. Ladd Furniture manufactures residential furniture, including the American of Martinsville brand.

JAMES HYLER has been appointed special assistant to the president of Nationwide Homes, a producer of modular housing systems based in Martinsville. Hyler joined Nationwide in 1962 as a quality control inspector and was named manager of quality control in 1973. In his new position he will have responsibilities relating to the expansion of the company's Martinsville facilities and will continue to direct quality control functions. Succeeding Hyler as manager of quality control is JEFFERY FINNEY, who joined Nationwide in 1982. Finney will be responsible for the quality of incoming products, raw materials, finished products and liaison with builders.

MEDICINE

DR. AMY J. ALLEN has become associated with Physicians to Children in Roanoke. Allen was in private practice for four years in Paoli, Pa., then worked with Kaiser Permanente for three years in Alexandria before coming to the pediatric practice in Roanoke.

MORTGAGE BANKING

LOUISE E. CONNER, real estate loan officer with Salem Bank & Trust, has been elected president of the Roanoke Valley Mortgage Bankers Association. Other officers for 1996 are DEBBIE WILSON, Signet Mortgage Corp., vice president; and LINDA REPASS, Majestic Mortgage Corp., secretary-treasurer.

ORGANIZATION

MICHAEL P. HALEY, president and chief executive officer of American of Martinsville, and DONALD G. SMITH, chairman and chief executive officer of Roanoke Electric Steel Corp., have been elected to three-year terms on the board of directors of the Virginia Foundation for Research and Economic Education, an independent, nonpartisan research foundation for strengthening Virginia's business environment.

PUBLISHING

SONDRA BRACKMAN has joined Multimedia Creations in Salem as a graphic designer and production manager. She previously was employed by Virginia Tech. Her responsibilities will include electronic publishing via the Internet and converting graphics to an electronic format.

REAL ESTATE

JACK D. FRYE JR., owner-broker and manager of Century 21 Young Realty in Salem, has been named 1995 Realtor of the Year by the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors. Frye was honored for his work in the area of Realtor ethics and professional standards.

TRANSPORTATION

STEVEN A. EVANS has been appointed assistant vice president-finance in Norfolk Southern Corp.'s finance department, succeeding WILLIAM R. MARTIN, who has retired. Evans joined Southern Railway, a Norfolk Southern predecessor, as a management trainee in the marketing division in 1977. He most recent promotion has been director of risk and capital planning.
