LISBON, Portugal - A Socialist lawyer defeated a former premier Sunday in elections to succeed veteran statesman Mario Soares as Portugal's president.
Jorge Sampaio's victory over Anibal Cavaco Silva, who conceded two hours after polls closed, ends a political era, giving Portugal a government and president of the same political hue for the first time since democracy was restored in 1974. Socialists won October's general elections, costing Cavaco Silva his premiership.
It also marks a milestone for Portugal as the nation's two dominant politicians of the past decade exit the scene - Soares, the affable defender of civil rights, and Cavaco Silva, the austere technocrat.
``Portuguese, we are at the start of a new political cycle,'' Sampaio said.

Jews: Norway owes on Nazi-taken goods
TEL AVIV, Israel - Norway's tiny Jewish community wants the Norwegian government to pay for Jewish property seized by the country's Nazi collaborationist regime, its chief rabbi said Sunday.
Rabbi Michael Melchior said he and other representatives of Norway's 2,000 Jews are negotiating with Oslo over compensation for Jewish bank accounts, real estate and goods.
``Property was taken by the Norwegian government and never paid back,'' Melchior said. ``There will have to be a settlement.''
