The captain of the 1995 North Cross football team and member of the wrestling team died at school Monday of an apparent heart attack.
Roanoke County Police Sgt. F.B. Haggerty said an emergency call came in at 3:26 p.m. when Grayson B. Hooper, 18, passed out during wrestling practice.
Hooper had been jogging in the school gym when he complained to his coach that ``he wasn't feeling well,'' Haggerty said.
The coach suggested Hooper sit down and rest. He passed out awhile later, Haggerty said.
An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death, but the medical examiner said Hooper died of a ``heart event,'' Haggerty said.
Clearbrook Rescue Squad took Hooper to Lewis-Gale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hugh Meagher, North Cross dean of students, said Hooper was a senior and an above-average student who ``was very popular.'' He was in the process of sending out college applications.
He attended Community School through the eighth grade, as did his younger brother, Chad.
North Cross will have a counselor visit the school today to help students and teachers deal with Hooper's death, Meagher said.
Hooper is the son of Robert W. and Bonnie Hooper of Salem.
