Roanoke police charged a bail bondsman with firing his gun at a man he was attempting to apprehend. No one was injured.
Police arrested Wayne Brown, 39, of Southeast Roanoke after a witness said he saw a man approach an occupied car at Fourth Street and Rorer Avenue Southwest and fire a gun. Brown was charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle, a felony, and discharging a firearm in the city, a misdemeanor.
Police gave this account: About 6:40 p.m. Thursday, a man flagged down a police officer and said he saw a man shooting at a motorist in Southwest Roanoke. The man fired one shot into the air, one at a car's front tire and another at a rear tire, police said.
In a telephone interview, Brown said he was attempting to apprehend a man whom he described as a felon who had jumped bond. Brown is a bondsman with Payless Bail Bonds in Roanoke.
Brown said he shot at the man's tire only after the man attempted to back up his car. The shot flattened one of the man's tires.
Brown took the man into custody Thursday and was arrested the following day by Roanoke police. He was released on bond and continues to work for Payless. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 2 in Roanoke Circuit Court.
