Giles sank 10 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter, and the twin tandem of Anthony and Aaron Meyers led visiting Giles to a 66-62 non-district victory over Fort Chiswell on Tuesday night.
After a haltime tie, the Spartans opened a lead, built a nine-point margin early in the fourth period and withstood a late Fort Chiswell comeback by hitting its free throws.
Anthony Meyers scored a team-high 16 points and Aaron Meyers added 10. Robbie Claytor chipped in 15 and Adam Jones had 14 for Giles (7-1).
Brad Hughes was the leading scorer for the Pioneers (4-4) with 16 points to match his seven assists. Anthony Watson chipped in 15 points and eight rebounds.
E.C. Glass 77, Franklin County 57: The Hilltoppers sank 11 of 14 field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter as E.C. Glass downed the Eagles in a non-conference game in Rocky Mount.
Franklin County (2-11) missed its first seven shots from the field, but hit 13 of 15 free-throw attempts to trail by one at halftime. E.C. Glass (4-6) pulled away in the second half as the Eagles sputtered, hitting only eight of 26 shots. For the game, Franklin County shot 31 percent from the field while the Hilltoppers cruised, sinking 51 percent of their attempts.
Andre Kendrick scored 19 points for the Hilltoppers and Lamont Hughes added 14.
K.C. Hancock had 16 points for the Eagles.
Covington 71, Craig County 44: The Cougars took an 11-2 lead in the first quarter, overcoming the loss of two starters because of disciplinary reasons, as Covington rolled over the visiting Rockets in Pioneer District action.
Boo Stewart led the Cougars (4-6, 3-1) with a game-high 16 points. Brian Holloway had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Barber scored 12 points.
Eric Gillingham led Craig County with 11 points.
Heritage 71, Pulaski County 59: The Pioneers jumped took an early lead and went on to a non-district victory over the Cougars in Lynchburg.
Heritage (7-2) shot 50 percent from the floor for the game, and Pulaski County (3-5) shot 32 percent. Lewis Tardy led the Pioneers with 18 points and teammate Kevin Tardy added 17 points and eight rebounds.
Ron Branch led the Cougars with 19 points.
George Wythe 73, PH-Glade Spring 47: The Maroons got out of the gate quickly and never looked back in the Hogoheegee District matchup in Glade Spring.
George Wythe (7-1, 5-1) used pressure defense to build a 36-20 halftime lead. The Maroons outrebounded the Rebels 39-23 for the game.
Ted Ring had 15 points to lead the Maroons, and Brian Barnes had 13. PH-Glade Spring's Jarrett May had 17 to lead all scorers.
Richlands 96, Carroll County 74: The Tornadoes blew out the Cavaliers despite being outrebounded by eight in the non-district matchup in Richlands.
The Tornadoes (6-4) shot 54 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free-throw line for the game. J.T. Moore led Richlands with 34 points and Shane Berry had 12 points and nine assists.
Carroll County (1-9) was led by Jonathan Suratt, who scored 16 points.
Carlisle 69, Timberlake Christian 62: The Chiefs had four scorers in double figures, and Carlisle went on an 8-0 run with five minutes left to pull out the Virginia Independent Conference victory in Martinsville.
Marty Stanley and Bryant Redd each had four points in the run for the Chiefs (8-1, 4-0). Stanley and Redd each had 16 points to lead Carolina. Chad Martin added 15 and Joseph McClinton scored 12.
Wyatt Craig had 15 to lead Timberlake (4-3, 2-2). Paul Fitzgerald added 14, Jason Spear had 13 and Steve Glass had 12.
Covington Boys' Home 74, Rainelle Christian (W.Va.) 67: The Indians started strong, building a 10-point halftime lead behind Chris Thornton, as the Indians downed Rainelle Christian in a non-district game in Covington.
Thornton scored eight of his 13 points and had four steals in the first half. Freddy Portillo was the leading scorer for the Boys' Home (8-6) with 15 points, Sean Riddick had 14, Chris Hampton added 12 points and eight rebounds and Nebiyu Naod added 10 points and four assists.
Josh Workman led Rainelle (7-3) with a game-high 30 points.
Chilhowie 63, Rural Retreat 60: The Indians saw a 3-point shot carom of the rim at the buzzer that would have tied the Warriors in a Hogoheegee District game played in Rural Retreat.
It was a tight game throughout between the district foes. Blake Mason led Chilhowie with 24 points. Wayne Terry led Rural Retreat (1-7, 1-4) with 23 points.
Girls
E. C. Glass 65, Franklin County 32: The Hilltoppers took a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to a victory over the Eagles in a non-district game in Lynchburg.
E.C. Glass never trailed in the 33-point victory. The Hilltoppers were led by Tia Scott's 16 and Erin Reed's 12.
Franklin County (1-8) was led by Kelli Preston's eight points.
