Former United chief to head USAir

WASHINGTON - Stephen M. Wolf, former United Airlines chairman who engineered a massive employee buyout, was chosen Tuesday to be chairman and chief executive officer of USAir Group Inc.

United and USAir, the nation's fifth-largest carrier based on revenues, broke off merger talks in November.

Wolf, 54, UAL Corp.'s chairman and CEO from 1987 to 1994, persuaded United employees to relinquish $4.9 billion in wages and benefits in exchange for majority ownership. He is a senior adviser to Lazard Freres & Co.

Gift shop to move into Mish Mish site

A new gift shop will occupy the Roanoke City Market storefront at 14 Campbell Ave. S.E. that once housed Mish Mish Inc.

Leman Dudley, who bought the building last year, declined to identify the tenant prior to the store's opening.

Interior construction has started. The renovations will include an atrium, a balcony and an interior staircase. Dudley said the shop should be ready to open in April.

Brandon Bell to open tax offices

Former state Sen. Brandon Bell said he will open two new tax preparation offices: at Townside Festival Shopping Center on Franklin Road and in the Wal-Mart Discount Center on U.S. 220 South.

Bell said he has entered into a franchise agreement with Jackson Hewitt Tax Service of Virginia Beach, the country's second-largest tax service, with 1,400 offices in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Roanoke Electric Steel Corp., Roanoke-based maker of specialty steel products, has declared its 149th consecutive quarterly dividend: 11 cents per share, payable Feb. 23 to shareholders on Feb. 9.

Employees of Polymer Corp.'s Wytheville plant will vote today and Thursday on whether to affiliate with the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union. About 125 production and maintenance workers are eligible to vote. Polymer Corp., based in Reading, Pa., manufactures plastic materials in Wytheville for industrial uses.
