Arts commission offering grants

The Virginia Commission for the Arts recently published a list of performing artists available for performances throughout the state and will offer grants to pay part of the artists' fees.

The commission offers grants for schools and not-for-profit organizations that cover up to half the cost of the performances.

Del. Morgan Griffith, R-Salem, said anyone interested in applying for grants from his district may contact his office for an application.

His office is located at 113 E. Main St., Salem. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1250, Salem, 24153, and the phone number is 389-4498.

Companion program needs volunteers

The League of Older Americans Area Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers for its Senior Companion Program.

Volunteers will share four hours a day with another senior citizen to help prevent depression or loneliness.

In return, volunteers receive a nontaxed allowance of up to $200 per month, gas money, insurance while volunteering and other benefits.

Companions are needed for seniors in Botetourt, Craig and Roanoke counties.

For more information, call 345-0451 in Roanoke County; 884-2892 in Botetourt County; or 864-2031 in Craig County.
