The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office is investigating a case of money missing from an inmate work-release account.
Maj. Jim Davis said Wednesday that less than $5,000 is missing and had been taken over the last year or so.
Inmates pay a fee to participate in work release, which allows them to leave jail to go to work in the morning, then return to the jail in the evening and stay overnight.
"In November, we discovered a discrepancy ... in the amount of work-release funds we were taking in and the amount that was being deposited in a county account," Davis said.
Jailers routinely collect the money from inmates and write receipts, and the money is generally deposited every two weeks or so, Davis said.
More than 20 employees would have had access to the area where the money is kept, Davis said.
Once the investigation is complete, Davis will consult with the commonwealth's attorney's office to decide whether there is enough evidence to file charges.
