ALLISON, Rev. James Abner, Jr., 71, of Roanoke, died in a Salem hospit al Wednesday, January 17, 1996. He served Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church for 31 years, and was active in Roanoke city civic activities and in the Presbyterian Church at all levels. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Anderson Allison of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and David Cathers of Armonk, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law, James C. and Tracy Allison of Houston, Texas; daughther and son-in-law, Judith and Roberts Bass of Raleigh, N.C.; brother, Allen H. Allison and wife Betty of Franklin; brother-in-law, Edward Anderson and wife Janet of Ocean Port, N.J., and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. F. Tupper Garden officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road, Roanoke, Va. 24015. Friends may call at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
ANDREWS, Rev. Willie A., 75, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday , January 16, 1996. He was preceded in death by two sons, Rev. Allen Andrews and an infant son. Survivors include his wife, Addie G. Baxter Andrews; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Alfred Cecil (Jeanetta) Andrews, David (Evelyn) Andrews, James Andrews, Paul Lee Sr. (Nancy) Andrews all of Roanoke, and Willie Jr. (Carolyn) Andrews, Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Annette M. Baxter, Brenda Andrews Howard both of Roanoke; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence D. Baxter, Sonny M. (Frances) Baxter, Frank (Louise) Styles all of Roanoke, Theodore (Eva) Baxter, Petersburg, Theresa Baxter, Hazel Clark both of Washington D.C., Alease Anderson, Elizabeth Baxter both of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church with Dr. K.B. Wright officiating. Burial will be in Williams Memorial Park. BROOKS, Sylvia Clair, 86, of Blackstone, Va., formerly of Franklin County, died Tuesday, January 16, 1996, at Heritage Hall, Blackstone, Va. She was born in Brooks Mill. She was a daughter of the late A. J. H. Brooks and Nannie Blankenship Brooks. She is survived by two sisters, Thelma B. Dixon Clingenpeel, Pauline Brooks McGeorge, both of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Friday, January 19, at 2 p.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. CHRISTENSEN, Trula Cornett, 96, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 1996. Trula was born in Grayson County on October 2, 1899, the daughter of the late Robert Wiley and Virginia Yonce Cornett. She was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, and was employed by Welcome Wagon serving this area for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Christy Christensen, and two sons, Warren Shuler and Lewis (``Max"") Shuler. Surviving are a granddaughter and her husband, Bettina and Joel K. McClanahan of Richmond; three great-grandchildren, Michael and Karen McClanahan, and Christopher Shuler; a niece, Mildred Groce and her husband, the Rev. Harold Groce of Arden, N.C.; a cousin, Lucy Seymour of Eggleston, and many special friends, including Mozelle Brockett and Don Smith. There will be no visitation or services. The family suggests memorials to American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association in her memory. Oakey's Roanoke Chapel is handling funeral arrangements.
COX, Guida Phillips, 86, of Willis, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 1996 at Radford Community Hospital. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Elza and Helen Cox, Southmont, N.C., Warren (Bud) and Mavis Cox, Willis, Rev. Harold and Rosemary Cox, Claudville; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Eldridge Cox, Willis; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. DAVIS, Jesse Milton Ray, 71, of Bassett, formerly of Union Hall, died Monday, January 16, 1996 at his residence. Born July 13, 1924, he was the son of the late Thomas Frank and Nellie Fralin Davis. He was retired from DuPont after 29 years of service, and was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Beatrice Thomasson and Deanna and David Hodges, all of Colllinsville, Flora and Herbert Neal, Gretna, and Shirley and Marvin Hodges, Rocky Mount; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Price and Bonnie Davis, Union Hall, Lendberg Davis, Pensacola, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 19, 1996 at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. D. Hunt III officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis Family Cemetery. DIETRICH, Louise Duffy, 88, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Dietrich and a son, Douglas Edward Dietrich. She retired as a teacher with Botetourt County Schoo ls and was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Charles D. and Dianna T. Dietrich, Roanoke, three grandchildren, Douglas Edward Dietrich II, Roanoke, Keith Lane Dietrich, Bedford, Brian Charles Dietrich, Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Tate Edward Dietrich, Brett Charles Dietrich, both of Bedford. FOX, Genevieve H., 87, of Lewisburg, W.Va., died Tuesday, January 16, 1996, in the Greenbrier Val ley Medical Center following a long illness. She was born in St. Albans, November 2, 1908, the daughter of the late Beverly Galliston and Virginia Lee Hicks Hughes. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairlea, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Greenbrier Chapter of A.A.R.P. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Fox was preceded in death by her husband, Joe E. Fox in 1973, and a son, Edward Matherly. Survivors include one son, Jack E. Fox, Lewisburg; one daughter, Mrs. Jean Phillips, Roanoke; nine grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Fairlea with the Rev. Alvie Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens, Lewisburg. The family will receive friends at the McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Pallbearers will be men of the church. HURT, Mrs. Mary Ann Hurt, of Ferrum, passed away Monday, January 8, 1996 at Eldercare of Franklin County. Born December 13, 1906, she was a daughter of the late Robert Duncan and Mary Esther Savage Wescott of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her only sister, Ruth Wescott Downing who lived in Somerset Bermuda. Mrs. Hurt attended Central High School of Washington D.C., now Cardozo High School, was a graduate of George Washington University, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, a member of the Women's Club of Rocky Mount and the Patrick Henry Chapter of DAR in Martinsville, Va. She joined the DAR in Alexandria, and was later a regent of the William Winchester Chapter DAR in Westminister, Md. She was a member of the auxiliary of Franklin Memorial Hospital and inaugurated a baby cap project for the hospital. The auxilians have made hundreds of caps for the babies born at Franklin Memorial Hospital. She was also a member of the Historical Society of Franklin County. She and her husband, Dr. Frank B. Hurt, resided in Westminster, Md. for 35 years, where he was a member of the faculty of Westminster Maryland College. Since 1965, she had resided in Ferrum, where Dr. Hurt was a member of Ferrum College faculty for five years. In 1970, he retired and wrote ``The History of Ferrum College."" Dr. Hurt died in 1992. Mrs. Hurt is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 1996 at Lynch Funeral Home with the Revs. James S. Angle and M.G. Goodpasture and Professor Earl Grayson ``Bud"" Skeens officiating. Interment will follow in High Street Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeal home one hour prior to services. PRILLAMAN, Walter E. Sr., 71, of Rt. 3, Shannon Hills, Ridgeway, died Tuesday, January 16, 1996 at the V.A. Regional Medical Center, Salem. He was born in Bassett on August 24, 1924, son of the late Benjamin Turner Prillaman and Ellen Ross Prillaman. He was a retired maintenance employee at E.I. DuPont Co. with 38 years of service. Mr. Prillaman was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a charter member of Ridgeway Fire Department, and a member of the Knights of Pythias. He was a member of Rich Acres Christian Church, where he was a former deacon. He is survived by his wife of 45 year, Margaret Draper Prillaman of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lou and Gary Lumsden, Debbie and Steve Nash, all of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, W. E. Prillaman Jr. and Tammy Trent Prillaman, Ridgeway; sisters, Dura Lavinder, Martinsville, Arlene Stultz, Hialeah, Fla.; brother, Nelson L. Prillaman, Rocky Mount; eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold Prillaman. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at McKee Funeral Chapel, with Minister Creighton Beatty officiating.
