The Craig County Board of Supervisors, after requesting that several projects be added, endorsed a Virginia Department of Transportation six-year plan for improvements to county roads.
The supervisors, during their Tuesday meeting, also scheduled a Feb. 20 public hearing on the plan, which calls for spending roughly $362,000 during each of the six years, said County Administrator Stephen Carter said.
The plan calls for improvements to sections of five gravel roads, as well as bridge and approach improvements on two others. During a work session immediately before the Tuesday night meeting, the supervisors asked that the sections of Virginia 629 and 658 be added to the plan as well, Carter said. Department representatives said they will also look into a request to do work on Virginia 662.
Adding projects to the plan means state funding will start accumulating during the six-year period until enough money is available to complete the projects. Work on the added projects is unlikely to begin in the early years of the plan, Carter said.
In a related matter, the supervisors praised state Department of Transportation employees for their efforts in plowing roads during the recent snow storms.
Carter said a resolution from the board will be sent to the highway department, commending the workers.
On another matter, the supervisors directed Carter to meet with officials of the Roanoke Valley Economic Development Partnership to discuss the county's status in that organization.
