Forensics conference

RADFORD - The acute trauma team at the Radford Community Hospital and the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association are hosting a forensics conference for healthcare professionals on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Saint Albans Hospital Starlight Room.

The conference is free to Carilion Health System Associates, $15 for non-Carilion associates. Continuing education credits are available to participants.

Kim Eggleston, a registered nurse from the University of Virginia Department of Medicine, and Patricia Taylor, a forensic serologist for the Commonwealth of Virginia, will be guest speakers.

Tree pickup

BLACKSBURG - The town has resumed Christmas tree pickup and will continue it through Friday, Jan. 26. Remove all decorations and wires and place items for pickup at the curb. Related greenery, such as wreaths, may also be included.

Collections will be recycled into mulch. All residents are encouraged to participate in the recycling program to help keep over 50 tons of recyclable material from being put into the landfill.

Sheep referendum

The 1996 National Sheep Checkoff Referendum will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Sheep producers, feeders or importers who engaged in sheep production, feeding or importation of sheep or sheep products from Jan. 1, 1994 through Dec. 31,1994 are eligible to vote.

Absentee ballots must be requested in writing and can only be mailed from county extension offices until Jan. 26; they cannot be picked up in person. Absentee ballots must be returned to county extension offices by Feb. 2.

If the referendum is approved, domestic feeders and producers of sheep will be assessed 1 cent per pound on sales of live sheep and 2 cents per pound on greasy wool. Importers will be assessed 1 cent per pound or the equivalent on imported degreased wool and wool products.
