FIRM'S EXPANSION TO CREATE 200 JOBS

Morrison Molded Fiber Glass Co. began work Friday on a 100,000-square-foot expansion that will create 200 jobs in a Washington County industrial park between Abingdon and Bristol.

Gov. George Allen, attending a symbolic indoor groundbreaking, presented a check for $250,000 from the Governor's Opportunity Fund. The money will be used for site preparation.

The company, a major manufacturer of reinforced plastic structural parts and precast polymer concrete, will be investing more than $5 million in the project. It currently employs 480 people at its plant in nearby Bristol.

"While today's groundbreaking may be symbolic, the investment and jobs this project will bring are very real," Allen said. ``This is another step forward in our Virginia renaissance - a renaissance of growth, jobs, hope and opportunity across our commonwealth.''

The company's products include fiberglass ladder rails, grating, window components, tool handles, cooling tower components and oil field products. Polymer concrete products include utility boxes, vaults, drain systems, and highway and tunnel rehabilitation products.

The Virginia Department of Economic Development, Washington County and the Mount Rogers Partnership were involved in locating the expansion.
