Viola recital Tuesday at RU

RADFORD - Martin Irving's viola recital is Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m. in Radford University's Preston Auditorium. Irving, a member of the music faculty, will perform with several guest artists, including Elizabeth Bachelder, Chris Melchior and Lisa Bazuzi. The Radford University Chamber Orchestra also performs.

The musicians will play works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Hindemith and Schumann. Admission to the concert is $3 for adults, $1 for children and free with Radford University identification.

Basketball league organizing

CHRISTIANSBURG - Leisure Directions and Area 9 Special Olympics are co-sponsoring a basketball league for people with and without mental disabilities. Participants will be paired together to play basketball for exercise and socialization. Leisure Directions serves persons with mental retardation.

Volunteer orientation is Tuesday at 6 p.m., at Blacksburg Middle School. The league will play on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m., at Blacksburg High School.

Limited transportation will be provided for persons with mental disabilities.

Literacy Volunteers tutor training

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley will offer tutor training. Basic Literacy tutor training will be held on four consecutive Sundays, Feb. 4-25., 1-5:30 p.m., at the Radford Public Library. English as a Second Language tutor training will be held on three consecutive Saturdays, Feb. 3-24, 3-9 p.m., at the Virginia Tech Cranwell International Center in Blacksburg.

Conserve water in Pulaski County

PULASKI - County authorities are asking residents and businesses to conserve water until further notice because storm debris has damaged water intakes at the two treatment plants that serve the county.

The notice affects all customers of the Pulaski County Public Service Authority, the Town of Pulaski and the Town of Dublin.

Also, residents are being asked not to travel in downtown Pulaski due to flooding.

Flooding along Peak Creek may worse as runoff from upstream reservoirs continues.

Some residents in the Kersey Bottom, Lottier Bottom and Dora Highway areas have been evacuated, authorities said Friday.

Greenhouse gas lecture Jan. 29

BLACKSBURG - Saifur Rahman, director of the Center for Energy and the Global Environment at Virginia Tech, will present "The Need for Global Understanding in Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions" on Monday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m., at the Virginia Museum of Natural History in Blacksburg.
