GRAYSON COUNTY STAYS UNBEATEN

Grayson County held a three-point lead with only a minute left, but sank its free throws and held Fort Chiswell scoreless the rest of the way to down the Pioneers 68-58 in the Mountain Empire District Friday night in Fort Chiswell.

Grayson County sank 10 of 15 free throws in the final quarter and seven in the last minute to ice the victory.

Chad Shaffner had a big night for the Blue Devils (11-0 overall, 2-0 district) with a game-high 23 points. Wes Self chipped in 17 and Chad McMillan added 10.

Brad Hughes led Fort Chiswell (4-5, 1-1) with 15 points and seven assists. Six other Pioneers had five or more points.

Oak Hill Academy 148, Laurinburg (N.C.) Institute. 58: All 10 Warriors scored, seven in double figures, as they destroyed Laurinburg in Mouth of Wilson.

Ed Sheffey had eight points and 12 assists for Oak Hill (18-2). The Warriors' Ricardo Crumble led all scorers with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Steve Jackson poured in 25 points and teammate Attilla Cosby added 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Charley Smalls led Laurinburg (12-5) with 19 points.

Liberty 68, Buckingham County 61: The Minutemen received a scare from the Knights before Gregg Reynolds scored eight points in the fourth quarter of a Seminole District victory in Buckingham.

Reynolds, who scored 11 points, hit three driving shots in the fourth quarter to keep Buckingham County (6-6, 6-6) at arm's length.

Robert Corson led Liberty (11-0, 11-0) with 17 points and Neil Roop had 14.

Dwayne Braxton led the Knights with 26 points.

Marion 49, Carroll County 46: The Cavaliers could manage just 15 second-half points in losing a non-district game in Hillsville.

Carroll County (1-11) went 61/2 minutes without scoring in fourth quarter as the Scarlet Hurricane (5-7) took the lead for good with an 10-0 run.

Austin Dexter tied it at 39 with 2:20 to play, then Leon Rasnake hit two free throws to give Marion the lead. Rasnake finished with 13 points and Dexter had 12.

Ryan Morris led the Cavaliers with 13 points and Justin Iroler had 10.

Dan River 50, Bassett 41: The Wildcats outscored the Bengals 23-13 in the fourth quarter en route to a nine-point Piedmont District victory in Ringgold.

Steven Guy scored eight of his 14 points in the last period. Dan River (6-7, 5-5) salted away the victory from the free-throw line. Antoine Reed added 14 points for the Wildcats. Devone Claybrooks led Bassett (5-5, 5-4) with 18 points.

Martinsville 64, Gretna 59: Manti Venable and Leander Preston combined for 43 points to lead the Bulldogs to a come-from-behind Piedmont District victory at Martinsville.

Venable finished with 22 points, eight of those in the fourth quarter as Martinsville (4-6, 4-5) came back from a four-point deficit.

Preston, who had 21 points, kept Martinsville in the game early. The Bulldogs trailed 23-11 at the end of a quarter.

Howard Slayton scored 16 points for Gretna, Jay Patrick had 14 and Brian Robertson 10.

Magna Vista 65, Chatham 42: Jermaine Simmons scored eight of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter to lead the Warriors to a Piedmont District victory over the winless Cavaliers.

Landa Martin scored 14 for Magna Vista (7-3, 7-3), which led 32-13 at halftime and 53-26 after three quarters.

Jeromy Clay paced Chatham (0-13, 0-11) with 12 points.

Rocky Gap 53, Narrows 44 The Eagles shook off a slow start on their way to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Green Wave in Rocky Gap.

Rocky Gap (4-6, 2-0) trailed 6-5 after the first quarter before opening a five-point halftime lead. Joe Lambert scored all seven of his points from the free-throw line on 7-for-8 shooting in the final 1:16.

Bryan Pruett led Narrows (3-6, 0-3) with 17 points.

Patrick County 57, Laurel Park 54: Shawn Smart's only basket of the game was a big one, as he made a 3-pointer from the left corner with 10 seconds to play to lift the Cougars to a Piedmont District victory over the Lancers in Stuart.

Patrick County (7-3, 6-3) had rallied from a six-point fourth-quarter deficit to tie the score at 54. The Cougars called time out and set up a play for Smart, a shooting guard who came off the bench for the foul-plagued Cougars.

Laurel Park, which had only two field goals and a pair of free throws in the final quarter, got one last shot, but Rashad Wall's 35-footer at the buzzer hit the rim.

Ray Hylton led the Cougars with 28 points and four 3-pointers. Jason Wood added 12.

Wall led Laurel Park (5-6, 5-5) with 15 points, Cory Flood had 14 and Eric Jones 11.

Giles 86, Shawsville 63 The Spartans took an early 12-point lead and coasted to a victory over the Shawnees in a boys Three Rivers District game in Pearisburg.

Giles' Josh Stephens poured in 22 points to lead all scorers. Teammate Robbie Claytor added 18 for the Spartans (9-1, 2-0).

Shawsville (1-7, 0-2) was led by Barnett Carr's 19 points and Larry Smith's 18.

George Wythe 79, Rural Retreat 60: The Maroons outscored the Indians 48-33 in the second half as George Wythe cruised to a Hogoheegee District victory in Rural Retreat.

Ted Ring led the Maroons (8-1, 6-1) with a game-high 29 points. Freddy Moses accounted for 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Brian Bourne also scored 13.

Wayne Terry was the high scorer for Rural Retreat (1-9, 1-5) with 16. Chris Rakes added 13.
