MAINSTREET BANK EARNINGS SET RECORD

MainStreet BankGroup Inc. of Martinsville, formerly Piedmont BankGroup Inc., has announced record earnings for the quarter and the year.

For 1995, the company earned $10.7 million or $2.58 a share compared to 1994's $4 million or $1.06 a share.

For the fourth quarter, the banking company earned $3.4 million or 80 cents a share compared to $2.7 million or 71 cents a share for the same period a year earlier.

"The year 1995 was the best in MainStreet's history as we established new record earnings levels throughout the year which were reflected in our steadily rising stock price," said Chairman Michael R. Brenan. "The momentum gained during the fourth quarter of 1995 positions us well as we begin 1996."

The bank reported assets of $896 million at the end of the year.
