AKERS, Alma Caldwell, 87, of Blacksburg, died Monday, January 22, 1996 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center. Born in Montgomery County on February 25, 1908, she was the daughter of the late William Nicholas and Sarah Catherine Keffer Caldwell. Mrs. Akers taught school in the Montgomery County School System most of her adult life, beginning in 1924, and was the Supervisor of the Adult Education Classes for several years. She was a member of the First Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Lee Akers. Surviving are one daughter and son in law, Melva A. and Bradley E. Crawford; two grandsons, Christopher D. and wife Jennifer Crawford, and Rodney J. Crawford; one great grandson, Chazmen D. Crawford, all of Radford; one sister, Goldie Caldwell Stowers, Blacksburg; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 25, 1996 at the First Church of God with the Rev. Ronald Putnam officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. BAILEY, Charles Jr., (``Harold""), 71, of Blue Ridge, passed away Monday, January 22, 1996. He was retired from U.S. Steel and currently owned Triangle Structural Drafting. Surviving are his wife, Marie C. Bailey; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lois Bailey, Phoenix, Md.; two grandchildren, Zachary and Zoe Bailey; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bryant Barker, Boise, Idaho; also several nieces and nephews. BRITT, Beulah Pratt (``Boo Boo""), 80, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 1996 in a local hospital. She was the widow of Ronald D. Britt, a member of Belmont United Methodist Church and a retired hair dresser from the Vinton area. Mrs. Britt was also preceded in death by a brother, Thurman Pra tt and a sister, Cleo McCarty. Surviving are two brothers, Irvin ``Chubby"" Pratt, Salem, Ernest (and wife Becky) Pratt, Ruckersville; a sister-in-law, Alice Pratt, Salem; a nephew, Roger McCarty, Hardy; a niece, Darlene Jordan, Hardy; and a number of other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday from Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Sam E. McPhail officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery. BURKE, Hampden Aulick, 82, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 22, 1996, in Roanoke. He was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Hampden Aulick Burke of Petersburg. He was extremely active in civic affairs and a life-time Episcopalian. He was a veteran of World War II. He was the founder and an owner of Burke, Powers and Harty, Inc. Insurance Agency in Bristol, Tenn. He is survived by his wife, Nina Smith Burke; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Hester (Diana Burke) Brant of Marion and Mrs. Dale Lee (Pamela Burke) Rucker of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Katherine Brant Manning, Elizabeth Burke Brant, Aulick Burke Rucker and Elizabeth Evans Rucker. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the graveside in Mountain View Cemetery, Bristol, Va., with the Rev. George Bunn officiating. Va. and was the son of the late George W. and Jennie Weeks Whitlow. Mr. Whitlow was retired from Hoechst-Celanese Corp. with 33 years of service, was a member of the First Baptist Church at Rich Creek, Va. and was well known in the area for his artwork. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Surviving are his wife, Pauline Syres Whitlow; five daughters, Mrs. Bill ``Pam"" Stables and Mrs. Greg ``Paula"" Lee, both of Narrows, Mrs. Doug ``Marie"" Turner, Poquoson, Mrs. Rodger ``Linda"" Hager, Chapmanville, W. Va., and Mrs. Finley ``Brenda"" Hendrickson, Danville, Kentucky; one sister, Ruth Carden, Peterstown, W. Va.; nine grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.
