College puts a price on cadet class

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Converse College officials set the price Tuesday if the state wants them to continue aggressively recruiting students for a women's leadership program as an alternative to The Citadel - $1.4 million.

``We have not launched a specific enrollment campaign, because of the uncertainty of state funding,'' said Sandra Thomas, president of the private women's college.

The state last year pledged $3.4 million for the program that is designed as an alternative to admitting women cadets to South Carolina's military college.

Converse wants at least $1.4 million of that, which was for operations. The additional $2 million, also still unpaid, was for start-up costs.

The Legislature approved the funding, but only if the courts said the program was an acceptable alternative to women cadets at The Citadel.

The matter is delayed while a similar challenge to Virginia Military Institute's all-male policy is at the U.S. Supreme Court. The court heard arguments last week on whether states may offer single-sex public education, and a ruling is expected in June. - Associated Press House wants medal for evangelist, wife

WASHINGTON - The House commissioned a Congressional Gold Medal Tuesday to be awarded to evangelist Billy Graham and Ruth Graham, his wife of 52 years.

The bill, passed 403-2 and sent to the Senate, also authorizes the sale of collectible bronze duplicates of the medal.

``Throughout their lives, Ruth and Billy Graham have made great contributions to American society. They are religious leaders and role models,'' said Rep. Michael Castle, R-Del. ``Billy Graham's crusades, daily newspaper column and books have helped millions of people in need.'' - Associated Press
