Blacksburg native Milton M. "Sonny" Maxton, 64, the former superintendent of schools in Bland and Louisa counties, died Jan. 14, at his home in Mineral.
Maxton grew up in Blacksburg, the son of Virginia Tech professor Dr. J. L. Maxton, who served as an agricultural attache in southern Rhodesia after teaching at Tech.
Sonny Maxton graduated from Tech in 1956, after serving in the Korean War, and began a 38-year career as an educator.
He was married to another Blacksburg native, the former Ann Martin.
Maxton was superintendent of schools in Louisa County 1970-81 and then became superintendent in Bland County where he remained until his retirement in 1989. He had also taught in the Gloucester County schools during the 1960s and held several administrative positions there.
In Louisa County, he presided over the expansion of the school system and construction of several new schools as the community grew following construction of a Virginia Power plant in the county.
Survivors include his mother, Flora Milton Murray Maxton of Blacksburg.
