THE TIPOFF

PUBESCENT PASTIMES: Tonight from 8-11:30, students in grades 9 through 12 can be treated to the musical beats of Area 51, Phatso and Unfound Logic during Band Night at the Teen Center, 3738 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke. Admission is $3. Call 772-2058.

On Saturday, from 7-11 p.m., Straight Street Roanoke Valley, a nondenominational, nonprofit ministry, will hold Youth Night at the Central YMCA in downtown Roanoke. The $3 admission charge entitles students in grades 6 through 12 to basketball, volleyball, racquetball, swimming, chess, checkers, cards and other board games. Call Keith Farmer, 342-2078.

HAPPY TALES TO YOU: "Tales of Appalachia" that is, performed Saturday by the Kandinsky Trio and guest master storyteller Connie Regan-Blake. The music by Grammy winner and former All-Pro tackle Mike Reid will magically meld with a telling of an Appalachian folk tale, "The Cantankerous Blacksmith," at 8 p.m. in Roanoke College's Olin Theater. Tickets cost $9. For reservations, call 375-2333 before 5 p.m. today. A rehearsal of "Tales of Appalachia" will be open to the public for free Saturday morning at 11:30 in the theater.

BIKERS' BARTER: The first ever swap meet of its kind - at least to Blue Ridge Bicycle Club members' knowledge - will be held at the Roanoke County Main Library Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to various bicycle parts and accessories for sale, a bevy of bikes anchored on wind trainers, which make it possible to pedal indoors, will be available for tryouts. Videos about bicycling will be shown, mechanics will be on hand to answer maintenance and repair questions and refreshments will be served. There is no admission charge. Call 772-3343.

JAZZ JAM: Whether classic sounds of Glenn Miller and Count Basie or contemporary arrangements by Toshiko Akiyoshi and Maynard Ferguson, the United States Air Force Air Combat Command Heritage of America Band plays them. Catch the diverse performance of the Langley Air Force Base-based band for $3 on Monday at 8 p.m. in Virginia Tech's Squires Student Center, Blacksburg (231-5200), or for free on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Cave Spring High School Auditorium, 3712 Chaparral Drive S.W., Roanoke (772-7550).

UKRAINIAN UPPERS describes both the mood of the Veryovka Ukrainian Dance Company's melodious folk songs and ballads and the spectacular leaps of the troupe's Cossack and Chumak dancers. The internationally acclaimed 85-member ensemble - on its first North American tour - will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at George Washington Auditorium, 701 Broad St., Danville. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $10 for students. Call the Danville Area Association for the Arts and Humanities at (804) 792-6965.
