KNIGHTS' 3-GAME SKID ENDS CAVE SPRING TOPS PATRIOTS 70-60

Before and after Thursday night's boys' basketball game, Cave Spring treated Patrick Henry with courtesy and respect.

But during the game, the Knights were not very hospitable. They sank eight 3-point goals and 24 free throws, dispatching the visiting Patriots 70-60 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

``This was a tremendous win for us because we were in the throes of a three-game losing streak,'' said Chris Carr, Cave Spring's coach. ``Tonight, we decided to run the coaches' agenda instead of the players' agenda. Plus, we got excellent bench contributions.''

Playmaker Jeff Lang led Cave Spring, scoring a game-high 21 points and converting 14 of 16 free throws. Knights reserve David Harms scored a career-high 17 points, 12 on 3-pointers.

``We made an All-American out of No.31 [Harms], just by letting him shoot,'' said Woody Deans, PH's coach.

The Knights (8-8 overall, 3-1 district) opened a 12-5 first-quarter lead. The Patriots (7-8, 1-2) committed five turnovers before their first basket.

``We had two lackluster practices the two days before this,''' Deans said. ``If you don't practice well, you're not going to play well.''

PH stayed close for most of the second and third quarters, even leading briefly at 33-31 and 38-37. But Lang and Harms each made two baskets as the Knights scored 10 consecutive points in a two-minute span at the end of the third period.

Cave Spring salted the game away in the fourth period, making 17 of 20 free throws.

Ronnie Kasey was the Patriots' leading scorer with 16 points. Sophomore Boo Battle added 15.

Before the game, Cave Spring's boosters presented Deans with a golf umbrella and a putter. Deans has announced this season will be his last as a coach.

``Woody's a class act and he needs to be recognized,'' Carr said.
