VMI FALLS JUST SHORT OF UPSET

Johnny Taylor flipped back an offensive rebound for two points at the buzzer as Tennessee-Chattanooga thwarted VMI's upset bid 71-69 on Monday night in a Southern Conference game in Chattanooga, Tenn.

VMI's Brent Conley had tied the score with 35 seconds left. The Moccasins (9-8 overall, 3-3 Southern), who had no timeouts left, got the ball to Willie Young, who missed a shot. Julian Scott of kept the ball alive for UT-C, setting up Taylor's winner.

Lawrence Gullette scored 17 of his 30 points in the first half as the Keydets (8-6, 2-2) took a 39-36 lead. Conley finished with 18 points.

No.6 Villanova 72, No.18 Syracuse 69, OT: Eric Eberz's 3-pointer 51 seconds into overtime gave the Wildcats (17-3, 8-2) the lead for good, and they held off the Orangemen (14-6, 5-5) in a Big East Conference game in Syracuse, N.Y.

Radford 73, Maryland-Baltimore County 63: Jason Lansdown scored 22 points and Eric Bowens added 17 as the Highlanders snapped a three-game losing streak with a road victory over the Retrievers in the Big South Conference.

Radford (10-10, 4-4) took control with a 14-1 run midway through the second half. Tony Thompson scored 15 points to lead UMBC (3-16, 1-7).

UNC-Greensboro 63, Liberty 57: Jonathan Clifton scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half as the Spartans (13-4, 7-0) earned their school-record eighth consecutive victory, beating the Flames (9-8, 3-4) in a Big South game in Greensboro, N.C.

Virginia Commonwealth 63, UNC-Wilmington 45: Patrick Lee and Ivan Chappell scored 14 points apiece as the Rams (14-7, 7-1) overcame 39 percent shooting to beat the Seahawks (7-11, 5-3) in a CAA game in Wilmington, N.C.

Maine 84, Hampton 81, OT: John Gordon scored 21 points, including five consecutive points in overtime, as the Black Bears (10-7) outlasted the Pirates (4-15) in Hampton. JaFonde Williams poured in 43 points for the Pirates, hitting nine of 12 from 3-point range.

Richmond 105, George Mason 91: Eric Poole scored 22 points, and the Spiders (6-12, 2-6) had their biggest offensive output of the season in a Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Patriots (8-10, 3-5) in Richmond.

Ferrum 71, Chowan 61: Michael Hunter scored nearly half of the Panthers' points as they came away with a non-conference victory over the Braves in Ferrum.

Hunter, a sophomore swingman from Alleghany High School, scored 34 points to lead the way for Ferrum (7-9). Herman Jordan led Chowan (6-9) with 19 points.

Old Dominion 67, American 47: Joe Bunn scored 23 points, and the Monarchs (11-9, 6-2) ended the suspense early with a 25-4 first-half run on their way to a CAA victory over the Eagles (8-9, 4-4) in Norfolk.

Women

Radford 67, Maryland-Baltimore County 55: In Radford, Kim Hairston scored 25 points and Dede Logemann added 23 points and 11 rebounds as the Highlanders (10-8, 6-1) beat the Retrievers (7-10, 4-2) in a Big South Conference game, extending their home-court winning streak to 11 games.

Radford, which has won eight of nine overall, led 35-29 at halftime before pulling away. Jennifer Gloyd led UMBC with 15 points.
