Officer kills robbery suspect
VIRGINIA BEACH - A police officer shot a robbery suspect to death Wednesday after the man pulled a gun on him and began firing, authorities said.
The suspect, Edward Carolina, 42, of Virginia Beach, was taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he died in surgery shortly after 1 p.m., said police spokesman Mike Carey.
The officer was not hurt, Carey said.
According to Carey, a man went into a linen store shortly before 11 a.m., pulled a handgun and robbed the business. The robbery victim went to a jewelry store next door for help when the man left on foot, and someone at that store activated an alarm to police.
Within minutes, a police officer spotted a man fitting the suspect's description at a shopping center across the street from the linen store. When the officer approached, the man pulled a gun and began firing, Carey said. The officer fired back.
Police were investigating the shooting. Carey declined to identify the officer.

Missing McDonald rescued
LYNCHBURG - A CSX Transportation Inc. train crew has rescued fast-food icon Ronald McDonald from the banks of the James River.
CSX train brakeman Greg Childress first saw the seven-foot plastic statue, orange hair and all, reclining on the river bank Tuesday night.
``He said `That looks like Ronald McDonald down there!' We looked a little closer, and sure enough - it was,'' conductor David Haney said.
The crew stopped the train and retrieved the statue, Haney said, then gave it a free ride back to Lynchburg on the back of the train's caboose. ``We passed a carload of kids who really got a kick out of it,'' Haney said.
The statue was one of two stolen from a Lynchburg McDonald's several months ago. Police had recovered the other one earlier.

Ex-headmaster charged
MARSHALL - The former head of a private school in Fauquier County has been arrested and accused of sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl who was one of his students.
Craig Channell, 47, of Washington was indicted last week on one count of sexual abuse and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor, authorities said. The incidents happened last summer, during the 250-pupil Wakefield School's summer break, and did not take place on campus.
County social services and sheriff's investigators did not begin looking into the case until October, when they received several complaints, said Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney J. Gregory Ashwell.
Authorities declined to provide more details about the case, saying it would harm their investigation.
Channell was arrested Friday and released over the weekend on $5,000 bond pending a court hearing next week.
He resigned in August as headmaster of the day school, citing personal reasons.

Police shooting draws inquiry
FREDERICKSBURG - Police are investigating the shooting of an unarmed, fleeing suspect by a Fredericksburg police officer.
Police spokesman Jim Shelhorse said Tuesday that Burke Arnold, 23, of Fredericksburg was shot in the stomach by officer Lloyd Holland after a foot chase Monday night.
Holland had his gun drawn as Arnold entered a house and slammed a door on the officer and his pistol. The gun went off.
City Police Chief Jim Powers said Holland mistakenly thought Arnold was a person named in a sealed drug indictment last week. Holland became more suspicious when Arnold ran. Police said Arnold was not armed.
Arnold was taken to Mary Washington Hospital after the shooting.
Shelhorse said the investigation should take about a week. Holland, 28, is on administrative leave until the investigation is finished. Holland has been with the force since August 1994.

Space heater suspected in fire
WINCHESTER - The city's fire chief asked the Consumer Product Safety Commission to investigate an electric space heater that is suspected as the cause of fire that killed twin boys.
Rodney Lee and Eric Douglas Campbell Jr. died Jan. 18 after bystanders and firefighters tried in vain to rescue them from their burning house. The boys were 17 months old.
Winchester Fire Chief Lynn Miller said he asked the federal agency about the Marvin Quartz heater that fire officials believe ignited a cardboard box full of clothing.
The family said it had returned a similar heater from the same manufacturer in December because of a short circuit, Miller said.
``Their investigation is specific to the space heater that caused the fire, but it could lead them to check into other space heaters of the same brand and model,'' Miller said.
