He survived the flash flood and a cold snap after that. So in honor of the die-hard movie warrior hero, Jerry Hagwood named the puppy he found near his home in a tangle of flood debris Rambo.
The pup weighed just 1.7 pounds and was barely alive when Hagwood spotted him 11 days ago in a piece of carpet wedged into a fence. He took the animal to veterinarian June Cohron in Stuarts Draft with emphatic instructions.
``He said he didn't care what it cost; I was to keep the puppy alive,'' Cohron said. ``And I was to find a good home because the pup had already had enough misery in its life.''
``He probably was washed out from under a house or some other building by the flood,'' she said.
The puppy, which had not been weaned, had frostbite on its tiny paws, and Cohron gave it some glucose intravenously. Next, he licked milk off her finger. Then Hagwood fed it milk with an eyedropper. Soon, it was lapping milk from a small jar cover. Finally, he had a name.
``Jerry wanted to name this one Rambo because he's a survivor,'' Cohron said.
She found Rambo a new home but the name had to go. Now, he's plain old Buddy.
