Former Salem School Board Chairman John I. Moore on Wednesday added his name to a growing list of City Council candidates.
Incumbents Howard Packett and Alex Brown announced last week that they will seek re-election. Former Salem Police Chief Harry Haskins also announced his bid for council last week.
But Moore is the first candidate to indicate an interest in running a party-backed campaign.
Moore, 60, who is retired, said he is a Republican, but he has not formally been nominated by the Salem Republican party.
Salem GOP Chairman Bill Bradley said the party will not decide whether to nominate anyone for May's City Council elections until later this month.
Three people have shown interest in running as Republicans, Bradley said.
Moore said that an issue on which he hopes to campaign is holding referendums for large capital projects such as a proposed golf course at Mowles Spring Park.
"I think that projects such as that should be put before the people," Moore said.
Moore served 12 years on Salem's School Board before he was replaced in 1993 by William Sinkler.
Besides the four who have announced, the names of at least eight other people also have been circulating in Salem as possible City Council candidates.
