SENATE CANDIDATE DRAWS ON OWN WEALTH

Democrat Mark Warner, who has a net worth exceeding $100 million, has put $516,000 of his money in his campaign for the U.S. Senate, finance reports show.

With another $313,000 from supporters, the Alexandria businessman has put together $829,000 since he began raising money late last year, according to forms filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission.

Republican Sen. John Warner raised nearly $1.6 million last year, bringing the total raised since his last re-election bid in 1990 to about $2 million, his campaign said.

John Warner reported almost $849,000 in cash on hand, while Mark Warner said he has nearly $302,000 in cash. The Warners are not related.

The three-term senator faces Jim Miller, a Reagan administration budget director, in a June 11 primary for the GOP nomination. Miller raised more than $413,000 in 1995 and has $65,000 in cash on hand.

Mark Warner, who made his fortune in the cellular telephone business, is worth more than $100 million, according to financial disclosure reports filed last week.

The $516,000 was a gift, not a loan to the campaign, said campaign spokesman Jeff Mitchell.

``Yes, he's put in funds, but there are nearly 1,000 people who have contributed to his campaign as well,'' Mitchell said. ``Mark has said that he would ask others to invest in his campaign and would invest in his campaign himself. This demonstrates that both of those are happening.''

Former U.S. Rep. Leslie Byrne, who also is seeking the Democratic nomination at a June convention, raised nearly $36,000 from others and lent $30,000 to her campaign. She has $49,000 in cash on hand.
