UNITED WAY HAS SHORTFALL, BUT STILL RAISES MORE THAN LAST CAMPAIGN

The United Way of Montgomery, Radford & Floyd wrapped up its campaign this week with a record fund-raising total, although the effort fell short of the 1995 target.

Campaign chairman Jay Johnson said Wednesday that $857,000 has been pledged to benefit 39 human service organizations supported by United Way dollars.

That amount is about $17,000 more than the United Way raised last year. However, it represents only 95 percent of this year's goal of $900,000.

Officials say economic trends such as downsizing, restructuring and corporate buyouts were detrimental to this year's campaign. In particular those trends affected state employees, who normally contribute about one-third of local United Way funds.

"It was a difficult year," said Kymn Davidson-Hamley, United Way's executive director. "But overall the results are positive. We didn't experience a deficit, and that's important."

Soon, the United Way committee charged with distributing funds to agency partners will begin deliberations. Davidson-Hamley said it's premature to say how the funds will be apportioned, given the overall campaign shortfall.

Some of those 39 agencies depend on United Way donations for all of their operating funds

"We're going to make sure the most critical agencies are funded first," Davidson-Hamley said.

The campaign results were announced at an awards and volunteer recognition ceremony held at the Farmhouse Restaurant. Also named were the officials for the 1996 campaign: Bonnie Svrcek as president and Dan Specht as campaign chairman. Deborah Brown was the 1995 president
