The Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority has postponed presentation of its Henry Street land-use plan before Roanoke City Council until the public has more of a chance to give feedback.
The authority had planned to go to council Monday, but some black Roanokers complained at recent community briefings that they had been left out of the plan. No new council date has been announced.
The authority has scheduled its first major public presentation of the plans for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at High Street Baptist Church, 2302 Florida Ave., N.W. The meeting will be rescheduled in the event of heavy snow.
Authority Executive Director Neva Smith said Thursday night that if people can't get to the next meeting, there will be others before the plans go to council.
The authority intends to ask the city for $5 million to improve curbs, parking, sidewalks and utilities on Henry Street. The authority and the city's Henry Street Revival Committee have proposed that as-yet-unselected private investors build a tourist strip of restaurants, music clubs and shops on Henry Street, which once was Roanoke's prime commercial street.
