The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra is opening its Sunday afternoon rehearsals to the public as musicians prepare for the season's remaining Monday Night Classics concerts.
The public is invited to sit in and listen and learn more about the preparation required to stage a symphony concert.
Rehearsals are scheduled from 2-4:30 p.m. on the Sunday preceding a Monday night concert at the Roanoke Civic Center Auditorium.
The public may arrive and leave at any time during the session.
From 4:30-5 p.m., the orchestra's composer-in-residence, Margaret Brouwer, will host a question-and-answer session with the conductor and musicians.
The orchestra requests a $1 donation from patrons 6 years and older. Informational handouts will be available.
An open rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday. Call 343-6221.
Summer camp info
Believe it or not, summer will be here before you know it.
Representatives from summer day and resident camps, sports camps and riding camps will offer information Thursday from 3-8 p.m. at Crystal Spring Elementary School, Roanoke. Representatives from Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia and North Carolina will be in attendance.
There is no admission charge.
Short-story contest
BIG STONE GAP - Entries of up to 1,500 words are being taken until March 1 for the ninth annual Lonesome Pine Short Story Contest.
Winners will be announced at the John Fox Jr. Festival scheduled for March 28 at Mountain Empire Community College. The contest, sponsored by Lonesome Pine Realty of Big Stone Gap, will offer first and second prizes and honorable mentions in adult, high school and middle school categories.
