A Raleigh, N.C., man who ran into a tree while skiing at the Wintergreen resort has died at University of Virginia Medical Center.
A hospital spokesman said Rutger Stalenhoef, 25, died of his injuries at 10:25 a.m. Monday in the intensive care unit.
He had been flown by helicopter from the Nelson County ski resort to the Charlottesville hospital shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday, said Wintergreen spokesman Mark Glickman.
Glickman said Stalenhoef was skiing with a friend on an expert run when he veered off a trail and struck a tree. Glickman did not know whether Stalenhoef was an expert skier.
``Nationally, it's one of those things that statistically only happens once every million skiers,'' Glickman said of the fatality.
