'Spay Day USA' is Feb. 27

BLACKSBURG - Montgomery County's Humane Society will participate in "Spay Day USA" Feb. 27, a nationwide effort to neuter cats and dogs.

Everyone can participate by having their pet neutered or by sponsoring someone else's cat or dog, said Julie Ligon, spay/neuter program director for the county humane society.

Between 14 and 17 million cats and dogs, one-quarter of all such domestic pets in the United States, are euthanized each year because there are not enough homes for them, according to humane society statistics.

Each dollar spent on spaying and neutering will save $18 on animal control by the year 2004, the humane society says.

Volunteers are needed, and information is available by calling the society at 382-1166 or by contacting the Doris Day Animal League, 227 Massachusetts Ave., NE, Suite 100, Washington, DC 20002. Telephone: (202) 546-1761.
