Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and should recover before the team opens training camp.
Smith, a former Virginia Tech All-American selected for his eighth Pro Bowl this season, had his right knee cleaned out during the procedure.
Smith, 32, had 10 1/2 sacks this season after missing much of training camp with a shoulder injury. He is Buffalo's all-time sack leader with 1261/2.
* The Dallas Cowboys have released troubled cornerback Clayton Holmes and overweight center Derek Kennard.
Holmes started six games this season after Kevin Smith was injured and before Deion Sanders arrived. Holmes later was suspended for a year by the NFL for repeated abuse of its drug policy.
Kennard, a center who was listed at 333 pounds, started the last four regular-season games and all three playoff games, including the Super Bowl.
* San Francisco 49ers tackle Harris Barton has given $100,000 to the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to support its programs for families.
Barton is a 1987 graduate of UNC-CH. His gift to his alma mater is the largest to date by a professional athlete.
