CAVE SPRING TEAMS DEFEND SWIM TITLES

Cave Spring won its fifth straight Roanoke Valley District swimming championship in both girls' and boys' competition at Gator Aquatics Center on Friday.

The Cave Spring boys won a close tri-meet with 103 points. Pulaski County had 96 and Patrick Henry 86.

Bryan Finucane won the 200-meter freestyle and 100 backstroke to pace the Knights. Pulaski County's Aaron Workman won the 100 breast stroke and 50 freestyle, and Brian Marsh led Patrick Henry by winning the 100 flystroke and 200 individual medley.

Lissa Wood posted first-place finishes in the 100 flystroke and 200 individual medley and swam on the winning medley relay team. Emily Whichard posted a first in the 200 freestyle and a second in the 100 freestyle for the Knights, who scored 142 points. Pulaski County finished with 85 and Patrick Henry had 69.

Old Dominion catcher Matt Quatraro rallied the Monarchs with a three-run homer in the fifth inning for a 13-7 victory over VMI in the opening game of the Citgo Challenge in Charleston, S.C.

VMI (0-1) will play N.C. State today at 1:30 p.m.
