F-C CLINCHES PIEDMONT CROWN

Andre Law scored six points to key a decisive third-quarter run that gave Fieldale-Collinsville a 68-45 victory over Dan River on Friday night and its first Piedmont District championship since the late 1970s.

The Cavaliers (12-2 overall, 12-1 district) broke open the game in Collinsville by forcing 11 turnovers in the third period and getting into its transition game. They outscored the Wildcats 20-3 in the period.

Point guard Delvin Joyce had nine steals for Fieldale-Collinsville.

Mancino Craighead scored 10 points for the Cavaliers, who will be the Piedmont District's top seed in the Region III tournament at Rustburg High School. The district title was determined based on winning percentage after the Piedmont athletic directors decided not to make up games postponed because of bad weather.

Steven Guy led Dan River with 20 points.

Staunton River 71, Buckingham County 68, 2OT: Hunter Hoggatt sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer in the second overtime as the Golden Eagles escaped with a Seminole District victory over the Knights in Buckingham.

Staunton River appeared to seize control in the second and third quarters, taking a 46-38 lead into the final period. Buckingham County battled back, however, forcing two overtime periods.

Hoggatt, the leading scorer in Timesland, amassed 41 points, and teammate Jeff English added 18 for the Golden Eagles (7-10, 7-10). Hoggatt knocked down six 3-pointers.

Dwayne Braxton led the Knights (10-8, 10-8) with 38 points.

Rockbridge County 60, Alleghany 59: The Wildcats overcame 19-for-36 shooting from the free-throw line in their Blue Ridge District victory over the Mountaineers in Lexington.

Casey Burks hit a shot at the buzzer that appeared to tie the score, but one of his feet was on the 3-point line.

Ricky Wright led Rockbridge County (4-12) with 25 points, five assists and four rebounds. Teammate Jamie Terrell added 18 points.

Alleghany (1-14, 0-6) was led by Kevin Cook's 13 points.

Pulaski County 62, E.C. Glass 57: The Cougars avenged an earlier blowout loss to the Hilltoppers in the rematch in Dublin.

E.C. Glass (6-11) never could get closer than five points in the final quarter, but it wasn't for lack of effort.

Pulaski (5-8) led by 14 when a Cougars player fouled Mark Snodgrass as he was shooting a 3-pointer. Then, Bruce Pankey and Ricky Duncan combined for five fourth-quarter 3-pointers for the Hilltoppers.

Although Pulaski had only one field goal in the final period, it did make 17 of 23 free throws.

Ron Branch led the Cougars with 20 points, Jamar McNair had 14 and Jerome Thomas 11. McNair and Thomas also had five rebounds apiece.

Bath County 59, James River 51, OT: David Buzzard's layup with 11seconds remaining in the fourth quarter sent the game to overtime and the Chargers outscored the Knights 12-4 in the extra period in Buchanan to win a Pioneer District matchup.

Bath County (12-2, 5-2) got nine of its 12 points from the free-throw line in overtime. Jon Rodgers had five of his 11 points in the extra session, including a 3-pointer. Buzzard added four free throws.

James River (8-8, 0-8) led 26-17 at the half and scored the first eight points of the third period, but the Chargers came back by capitalizing on the Knights' turnovers.

Buzzard finished with 17 points for Bath County, Matt Williams added 11 and Cory Wolf 10.

Shahan Burrell paced James River with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Chris Firebaugh and Brian Shorter added 11 apiece.

Carroll County 58, Marion 48: Jonathan Suratt scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the decisive fourth quarter as the Cavaliers beat the Scarlet Hurricane in a non-district matchup in Marion.

Carroll County (3-16) outscored the Scarlet Hurricane (6-11) 25-12 in the final quarter. Ryan Morris added 11 points for Carroll County.

Leon Rasnack led Marion with 16 points.

Bland 57, Galax 48: The Maroon Tide went flat in the fourth quarter in Galax, missing its first seven shots, and the Rockets claimed their first Mountain Empire District victory of the season.

John Thompson thrashed Galax in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of his game-high 17 points in the period. Andy Selfe and Lee Meadows each chipped in 11 and Smokey Parmenter had 10 for Bland (5-8, 1-4).

Ken Houtz led the Maroon Tide (5-8, 2-3) with 17 points. Galax committed 20 turnovers, most coming late in the game.

Liberty 68, Amherst County 41: Seven players scored in a big second quarter as the Minutemen cruised to a Seminole District victory over the Lancers in Bedford.

Liberty (15-0, 15-0), which can clinch the regular-season title tonight with a victory over Nelson County, outscored Amherst 23-9 in the second quarter to take control.

The Minutemen, ranked No.1 in The Associated Press' Group AA poll, were led by Gregg Reynolds, who scored a game-high 20 points. J.J. Coles added 10.

DeMarco Taylor led Amherst (7-8, 7-8) with 13.

Bassett 57, Laurel Park 54: The Bengals made four of five free throws in the waning seconds to hold off the Lancers in a Piedmont District game in Martinsville.

Bassett got many second-chance shots off rebounds in the fourth quarter and outrebounded Laurel Park 18-9 in the second half. DeVone Claybrooks paced the Bengals (8-8, 7-7) with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Laurel Park, which hit only two of six free throws in the final minutes, got 26 points from Rashad Wall. The Lancers' record fell to 7-8, 7-7.

George Wythe 71, Chilhowie 39: Ted Ring had 17 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Maroons to a Hogoheegee District victory over the Warriors in Wytheville.

George Wythe (12-4, 10-3) outscored Chilhowie 17-7 in the second quarter to take the lead for good. Chris Collins scored 13 points and Damian Taylor added 12 for the Maroons.

The Warriors (11-6, 9-3) were led by Earl Allen's 18 points.

William Fleming 60, Franklin County 48: The Colonels came out flat, but their size carried them to a home-court victory over the Eagles in the Roanoke Valley District.

Three players scored in double figures for William Fleming (11-5, 4-0). James Stokes led the way with 18 points, Sterling Tate had 14 and Brad Dunleavy added 13.

Jeremy Atkins led Franklin County (3-14, 1-4) with 10 points.

Gateway Christian 66, Greater Beckley (W.Va.) Christian 64: Brad Duncan scored eight of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as Gateway Christian edged Greater Beckley in Beckley, W.Va.

Gateway took a 33-24 halftime lead, but Greater Beckley rallied. Ryan Gordon hit a free throw in the final minute to seal the victory for Gateway.

J.T. Surface finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds for Gateway (8-6). Gordon and Allen Surface each scored 12 points.

Josh Anderson and Billy McGraw had 16 points apiece for Greater Beckley (7-10) and Chad Read added 15.

Glenvar 65, Highland 54: The Highlanders blasted out to a big lead and pounded the glass hard as they claimed a Pioneer District victory over the visiting Rams.

Corey Willis and James Williams sparked Glenvar in the opening half, combining for 24 points. Highland rallied in the second half, cutting a lead that had once been as many as 20 points, to eight. Josh Williamson sealed the victory by going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final period.

Williams helped on the rebounds, grabbing 13 rebounds as the Highlanders overcame a poor shooting night (38 percent) with many second-chance buckets. Glenvar (13-5, 9-1) held the rebounding edge 45-30.

Williams and Williamson each finished with 18 points. Willis had 15 points and nine rebounds

Bryan Werner was the top scorer for Highland (5-8, 3-5) with 15 points. Jacob Hull added 12, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Timmy Harold had 11 points to go with 10 rebounds.

Magna Vista 70, Martinsville 44: The Warriors took an early lead and coasted past the Bulldogs in a Piedmont District game in Ridgeway.

Elliott Millner led Magna Vista (11-4, 11-3) with 23 points and 16 rebounds.

Martinsville (5-9, 5-8) was led by Levere Breedlove's 15 points.

Grayson County 51, Fort Chiswell 47: The Blue Devils held the Pioneers to three field goals in the fourth quarter to preserve their perfect record with a victory in Independence.

Grayson County (16-0, 6-0) trailed 38-29 after three quarters of the Mountain Empire District matchup, but two big plays turned the tide.

First, Wes Self tied the score with a 3-pointer. Then, Chad McMillan made a steal, was fouled and hit two free throws to put the Blue Devils up by two.

Kevin Dalton led Grayson County with 14 points and T.J. King of Fort Chiswell (7-9, 2-5) led all scorers with 21.

The Blue Devils were playing their third game in three days and travel to rival Galax today.

Rural Retreat 71, Northwood 49: Wayne Terry pumped in 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and the Indians held the Panthers to two points in the third quarter en route to a Hogoheegee District victory in Saltville.

Terry had six of his points and Bradley Goodin netted eight of his 11 in the third period as Rural Retreat outscored Northwood 20-2.

Rural Retreat (5-11, 5-7) also got 13 points from Chris Rakes. Northwood (0-18, 0-14) was led by Brian Cardwell, who scored 13.

Narrows 55, Rocky Gap 41: Joe Shipbaugh flirted with a triple-double as the Green Wave claimed claimed its second Mountain Empire District victory, beating the Eagles in Narrows.

Shipbaugh, a point guard, had 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Robbie Stafford scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half as the Green Wave (5-9, 2-4) began to pull away.

Will Dodson had 17 points and Nathan Blessing added 13 to lead Rocky Gap (7-9, 5-2).

Covington 85, Craig County 57: The Cougars capitalized on 20 second-half turnovers by the Rockets and added to a two-point halftime lead as Covington sailed past Craig County in a Pioneer District game in New Castle.

Corey Whitaker had 21 points to lead twelve Covington scorers. Robert Roman added 11 and Kevin Holloway had 10 for the Cougars (11-6, 8-1).

Jamie Fisher paced Craig County (2-9, 0-7) with 19 points and Dewayne Crawford chipped in 18.

Giles 84, Shawsville 62: The Spartans scored the last 14 points of the first quarter to open a 15-point lead and never looked back in a Three Rivers District victory over the Shawnees in Shawsville.

Eight Giles players scored in the first quarter to lead the attack. Aaron Myers led the Spartans (12-2, 3-2) with 13 points and Robbie Claytor added 11.

Shawsville (1-14, 0-5) was led by Larry Smith, who scored 17.

Girls

Pulaski County 61, E.C. Glass 40: The Cougars, playing their first game in two weeks, started slowly, but outscored the Hilltoppers 26-16 in the second half to win a non-district game in Lynchburg.

Katrina Williams led Pulaski County (11-5) with 16 points. Lisa Skeens had 11 and Sarah Donald added 10.

The Cougars used 11 players and their pressure defense appeared to wear down E.C. Glass (10-7). Pulaski County led 25-24 at halftime, then used a 16-8 run to break open the game.

William Fleming 63, Franklin County 35: Revonda Barber scored 15 points and Shaunarey Walker had 12 points and 12 assists as the Colonels routed the Eagles in a Roanoke Valley District game at William Fleming.

The Colonels (10-4, 5-2) took a 18-5 lead and coasted to the victory. Kiann Trent scored 11 points and Carol Ellis added 12 rebounds and eight points.

Penne Clayborne had 11 points for Franklin County (2-13, 1-8).
