JAMES HOWLETT, FORMER RADFORD CIVIC LEADER, DIES

James Howlett, a former Radford resident who was chairman of the School Board and president of Inland Motor Corp., died in Winston-Salem, N.C., Thursday after a long illness.

Howlett was 63 and lived in King, N.C.

His life in Radford was filled with community service, family and a fast-paced engineering career.

Howlett worked at Inland Motor as director of marketing and was promoted to vice president of marketing in 1966. By 1970, he was named president of the company.

In 1981, Howlett left Inland Motor and formed a partnership with James Pandapas. The former manufacturing executives started International Scientific Industries. The company's business was robots, and Howlett was its president.

Howlett, the father of seven, served on the Radford School Board from 1971-77. He was chairman of the board during from 1975-77.

He also served on the advisory board for curriculum for New River Community College, was a member of the board of directors for the chamber of commerce, was chairman of major gifts for the Radford Community Hospital Fund Drive and a member of the board of directors for First & Merchants National Bank of Radford.

A memorial Mass will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, Radford.
